Hello,

I have a Dell i7 system(9150t) with a 500gb HD that is getting full. I'd like to add a Samsung 840 EVO SSD as the boot drive and use the HD as a data drive. The machine has an onboard SATA 2 controller. Would it be worth buying a SATA 3 controller? If so, which one would you recommend (available at Frys or Micro Center would be a plus)? My main concern is with the reliability of the card and how it would effect boot time and access times.

Thanks,

Chris

No, Sata III PICe 1x controller will not be any faster than onboard Sata II, PCIe 4x will be too expensive. I have one and its dtr stalls around 70 - 80 mbps on sequential read/write (large files). Will it be any faster for random IO for OS boot drive? I doubt it... Save money and put it towards other stuff.

btw have to checked about the M500s? Its a bit cheaper and I like Crucial better than Samsung...

I just found another thread in that basically states the same thing. Screw it! I'm sure the HD to SSD upgrade alone will be a huge improvement.

Thanks,

Chris
