lthough the GB/$ is good, i think jhasman was referring to the TLC NAND life expectancy.

That, and the overall performance. Anand was not impressed, nor am I. I'd rather plow that $$ into a better drive (M4 or the 830s that are left).

The use of TLC NAND and life expectancy is a hugely overblown IMHO.

depends on who you are and how u use the drive.

the average user who uses TLC NAND SSD for an OS drive will never notice the difference given the product MTBF.

the power user who use TLC NAND SSD for a processing drive will. i.e. professional user who does video encoding day in day out where they write and rewrite big data. TLC NAND's will wear quicker and will eventually catch up and cause slow down before the MTBF.

for heavy write and rewrite. there is a genuine reason why high end servers only use SLC NAND.

so all depends on how you plan to use the drive.

lastly - given the price of MLC NAND vs TLC NAND. why even bother with TLC NAND?

i bother with the 840 cause i couldn't get the 830 at a reasonable price, and because I need a 7mm drive.

pretty sure the coupon is going to be non-transferrable. :/

i also bit.

That would suck, really brings down the value for me.

I'm sure they don't want you to do it, but wonder how they'd even know? I guess it could tie into the order somehow, but I'm guessing it'll be a certificate with a long alphaneumeric string that they'll have no idea who has or enters into their system.

That's a guess of course, but just now looking at ebay it does seem this way - a paper cert with a code of some sort. People do seem to be buying / selling them.

So far my coupon failed to get me the free software. (code number not accepted). I will try again tomorrow.

My coupon just showed up today - in a *box*. I got shipped a piece of paper, in a box. Full of stuffing to make sure, I guess, that the paper didn't slide around and get broken? It was one of the dumber things I've seen in a really long time.

Paper is fragile. You don't want it breaking or, worse, crumpled, do you?

DO YOU?

Actually it was crumpled! It looks like they got some of the paper stuffing in the box, then put the coupon in place, then put more paper on it. The coupon is kind of wrinkled. I guess if I try to sell it here I'll have to mention that, hopefully it doesn't kill the value. Dang.
