Hi, I have the option to upgrade to an 840 Evo (new) for basically $10 (Building for a friend, he's getting my old 830 if it's worth it for my "labor" costs). I've been looking around for benchmarks and such, some numbers are all over the place. In general, the 840 Evo is a faster drive than the 830, correct? I'm aware that it doesn't last as long, however I won't be using the Evo for 10+ years, and certainly won't be writing much to it. My only concern otherwise, is that I very seldem will record 1080p 60FPS footage for games (once in a blue moon) and can currently do that without any issues, it's hardly noticeable. This upgrade also gives me an excuse to reformat, which I've been wanting to do anyway for a little while. If the drive is even slightly better overall, then it's worth it to me. It seems to be, but I'd like other opinions considering most comparisons are comparing the 840, 840 Evo, and 840 Pro.

Edit got a new 840 Pro for $25 instead.

You would, in-fact, be able to write 40-50GB on the EVO *per day* and it would still last you 8 or so years. Except that no normal person would write 50GB daily, in other words, the SSD will last any "normal user" decades in theory..so the "lower durability" of this SSD would (if ever!) only come into play if you happen to use it in a heavy server system or use it in any ways it's not even designed for. (Say, benchmarking the entire SSD for 5+ years in a row or some nonsense).

Go for the EVO, it's a nice, fast and affordable SSD.

I just went from a 128gb 830 to a 256gb 840 pro and there is no discernable difference to me. Yeah it benches faster but in day to day tasks I'll doubt you'll notice any difference.

Due to how some of the prices ran, I ended up grabbing the 840 pro instead for $25 essentially. I'll be happy with my 100% upgrade.

This is interesting.

I've gone from same 830 128GB to 256 Pro and I do see the difference clearly.

If you can get it for $10, sure...

And even then, the difference are fractions of a second. If its even worth the time and effort to reinstall everything.
