Samsung 830 64g, usable space?

how much space is available with the 64g Samsung 830 SSD drive?

I think my OCZ Vertex 2 100G is failing and i just wanna check before jumping the gun.. Micro Center has it for 70$

Like all 64GB SSDs, the Samsung 830 has 64GB of available space. That is 64000000000 bytes. Technically they usually give you a few more bytes than that, but if you got less, it would be false advertising.

Windows gives the capacity in GiB, even though it incorrectly labels it "GB". So in Windows you will see free space of about 59.6 GiB ( = 64 x 1000^3 / 1024^3 ).

Why useless he can put his OS in there at least.

but not apps or any data,, this is why you should get a 512GB so you can put all games all apps all data in.

64GB SSD's are not useless and yet again tweakboy you are talking out of your arse.

Windows 7 64bit and all updates comes in at worst 25GB. I just did a fresh install of W7x64 this weekend and after I disabled system restore, hibernation and the reduced page file my final footprint after all drivers and all Windows updates was 18GB.

That leaves at least 35GB free. That is more than enough for Office 2010 and a shed load of small programs and maybe even one game.

This would be replacing an SSD that only will use ~34Gb = OS + Unreal Tournament III.. like I said, I think it or something else is failing. Could be my i7 920 OC ... but upon rebooting right after a BSOD, the drive is not detected until I completely turn off the machine and unplug the SSD and then put it back together.. it's the only thing I know that works.

I've raised the voltage and upon rebooting before a complete shutdown and unplug, it still won't recognize. So I'm just seeing what is what.. I could go with the 128Gb for 115$ at MC before tax, 124$ out the door..

:hmm: i'll just have to wait and see

Yes, that sounds like the SSD is failing, if it isn't detected at reboot after a BSOD. My Mushkin Chronos Deluxe went out like that in my Netbook.

My last one failed and never got it together, i mean it never was able to be rebooted like i've been doing with this one. It's been maybe a week or two and i've only seen this twice... am i wrong to suspect it to just die after the first time?

The ssds price are going rapidly down, if you only need 64gb, get that only, maybe in 12 month, with the money difference you could be able to buy a complete new 128gb too.

Although .. if you might need the extra space, the difference in price between 64gb and 128gb is not that big, and worth considering.
