Just did this myself (using the monitor now!)

Best Buy has the Samsung 712N for $399.99 there are two rebates. One for $80 and another for $70 that print out when you buy it, bringing the total to $249.99.

Gonna have to search for the coupon. I recieved 10% off of the prerebate price for an additional $40 off. For a total after rebates of $209.99.

When the cashier scanned the coupon it worked for the mouse I was getting but not the monitor. The coupon says it is for Computer(and other) Accessories and lists things it can't be used for. Monitors aren't listed so she manually allowed the 10% off. Also I have a Reward Zone card so I'll be getting a couple dollars worth of a Best Buy gift card as well!

Hope this works for others.

Sounds great. Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to edit this message with my new (second) Samsung LCD. I'm planning on using the vouchers that I *should* be recieving eventually from the California Microsoft settlement (www.microsoftcalsettlement.com/) to help lesson the cost eventually, hopefully that will come through for me as well.

EDIT: My local BB was OOS, although from the look of the inventory I think they were never in stock. The guy said some were in transit, so I'll just call back each day. More updates to come.

EDIT 2: Went back today and they had an open box return 712N, so I bought it even though it was horribly bulging and suspicious. Got 15% off due to open box, but didn't get the coupon (I didn't press the issue). Just brought it home and there are no dead pixels! Compliments my 172N very well for my dual-monitor setup.

As I read the rules, I thought this would be fine as the rules say coupons that states copies and reproductions aren't allowed, this coupon didn't say that. But I reread again and maybe this just applys to scanned coupons since this isn't a scanned one but just an online coupon all remove the link.

If it was alright to link to let me know and I'll put it back up.

Currently I'm liking the LCD alright, trying to get use to the differences from a CRT.

One thing that's a little odd is the mouse get blurry moving it slowly but I think that just the way LCDs are. It's was great the little I played HL2. Gonna be gone for a couple days but I'll post back after using it a bit more.

Tom's hardware ranked the 710N highly and it appears to be the older model of the 712N. The specs are nearly identical to the 712N.

No DVI? No thanks....I wouldnt buy an LCD without DVI.

DVI = pixel perfect image.

Why buy this when you can get a 17" NEC MultiSync LCD1735 which has DVI and 16ms for $180 AR.

It will be at Staples on 1/2/05.

$320 - 50 staples rebate - $90 NEC rebate (unadvertised) = $180 for a sweet 17" LCD with DVI and 16ms RT.

Apply any coupons to drop the price even more....

Snap! That's hot.

Thanks for the tip.

But this monitor has 12ms response time.

That $90 rebate is YMMV I heard, you need to buy and then rebuy without somehow invalidating the first purchase date for the $90.

NO.

There is NO return/rebuying.
You're thinking of the staples $90 rebate from last week. Im talking about the NEC $90 rebate. Yes there were 2 $90 rebates.
On 1/2/05 Staples will have the NEC 17" for $320 - $50 STAPLES rebate = $$270
There is a $90 rebate that NEC is offering good till 1/15/05.
So $270 - $90 NEC rebate = $180
There is NO returning or rebuying!

NEC Rebate link

Link to NEC product page

The 2 rebates have nothing to do with each other and are processed by 2 different rebate processing centers so they WILL fly.

The nec rebate is also handled by parago. THe additional $90 rebate is doubtful. Staples easy rebates has everything integrated irrespective of manufacturer rebates.

Well ya the $90 staples rebate from last week of course wont work since its expired.

The $90 NEC rebate that is valid till 1/15/05 will.

I've had one of these monitors for a while now. Bright and good color. Amazing for the price.

I have to agree that is a great deal, but the 712N has 12ms with excellent picture quality.
Tomshardware gave the 710 a great review mostly, because the other monitors couldn't get close to their advertised specs.
I would also love it if the 712N had DVI, but the quality was good enough for me with fast response time.

My bro has the NEC 1735 and I have the 712N.
I have to say mine refreshes faster when alt-tabbing etc.
The aesthetics of the 712N is a lot worse than the 1735.
1735 comes with crappy speakers, but atleast it has it.
Both of these LCDs are great and I would highly recommend any of these two.
For $180 I would have to say the 1735 is a better deal. :)

Still waiting on the rebates for my 712N from Black Friday. Killer LCD though, even at $250. The image is wonderful and it plays HL2 w/ no visible ghosting whatsoever. DVI would be nice but it's not important until you start talking 19" and up.

Do you think it's risky to buy something with two big rebates on it? I've had mixed experience collecting rebates, even though I follow the directions meticulously.

Also, how does DVI enhance the experience if you have a DVI capable video card? Yes, I know this monitor doesn't have a DVI input, but I was wondering what I'd be missing out on since I plan to get a new video card soon. Thanks.

I just bought this (see above post), so now I am running dual with both the samsung 172N (very similar but older discontinued model) and the 712N (this one). The older model has a slimmer profile and a much nicer base, while the newer model is far brighter and maybe a little more clear and crisp. Both have excellent picture quality and are well known for being the equal of LCD's that use native DVI.

My old one has 25 ms response rate, while the new one has 12 ms. although I can honestly say that I have not detected a difference, or any ghosting in either.

An excellent monitor and highly recommended.
