Samsung 711T

Hi all,

New to the forum and just bought my first LCD, a Samsung 711T (same PVA panel as the 173p/Dell 1704/others). Generally, I'm quite happy with the IQ, looks very similar to my old Trinitron, yet much sharper and no more eye bleeding when browsing the net. Games like Doom3 and Halo look beautiful, dark colors are easily discernable, blurring is noticeable but much less than I had anticipated. Also, zero dead pixels (which I didn't really expect from a PVA panel anyhow).

However...there are two sections of the screen which are *slightly* brighter than the rest, upper left and bottom right, each about the size of a fist. Easily noticeable on a dark screen, or say a website like www.bmwmotorcycles.com (especially in a dim/dark room), and darker colors will often appear a bit "washed out" in these areas. Not terribly excessive, but present....brightness just isn't consistant, almost like the anti-glare coating wasn't applied evenly, or perhaps just how the backlight is designed?

So my question...am I being picky, or is this simply a normal trait for LCDs? Just wondering if I should go through the hassle of an RMA...or do they all do it, in which case I'll just have to accept it. Maybe an even screen is something the extra $$$ gets when you step up and buy an Eizo or Lacie, LOL...(though TBH I've never heard about this issue when reading reviews about the 173p or 711T). BTW, my Trinitron exhibited the exact same annoyance, maybe even worse.

Many thanks in advance for any input, would especially like to hear from anyone who happens to own a 711T or 173p.

cheers

I don't own a Samsung LCD screen, but my CMV CT-722D doesn't do what you're mentioning... the brightness is actually very much uniform over the entire surface area of my panel.

OK thanks guys, based on your input and a tech at Samsung (who said it sounds like a "backlight" issue) I'm going to go ahead and (sigh) RMA it back to provantage. It's really only apparent on a darker screen...but still very irksome.

I'll let y'all know how the replacement turns out.

cheers

lo all,

OK, I returned the 711T...and bought an Eizo L568, same PVA panel as the 711T.

Pros:

The backlighting is generally even, on a black screen there is a *slight* (even) glow at the corners in a dark room, not at all noticeable with a light on or during normal usage, where black still appears uniformly black over the entire screen.

The 711T had good static image quality, but this monitor blows it away...high quality photos/pics seem to have a life of their own, and literally "leap" out of the screen in an almost 3D like fashion. It's obvious the backlighting in the Eizo is of a better quality, the gamma correction probably helps out as well.

Smearing characteristics are the same as the Samsung, which I expected since the panels are identical. Minimal in UT and Doom 3, but more excessive in FarCry and Halo. Intense reds smear the most.

Cons:

One bright blue pixel, and right in the middle of the screen...lol. If it doesn't fix itself within a few days I'll try for an exchange...as it's pretty annoying.

Aside from the pixel defect this monitor rules, I would definately recommend it to anyone...unless your #1 priority is gaming then you will obviously need a faster panel.

cheers
