Good price for a very good drive. Thanks.

This and the WD5000YS are currently my favorite 500GB drives.

As much as I like Newegg and most of their products, just thought I'd toss out a warning about Newegg and some OEM parts.

I recently parted out a new rig from Newegg and picked up one of their 150GB Raptor X's with $30 MIR. Was a lot cheaper than most other places and the convenience of ordering from the same place speaks for itself. About a week ago BB was running a special for the retail kit for much less, $179 no MIR compared to $199 AR. No biggy, timing difference.

What was upsetting was that the retail drive from BB was a Jan 2007 build and the one I purchased from Newegg only a month or so earlier was a Jan 2006 build. That alone wasn't anything to get upset about....until I fired up my rig and found that the new drive was much quieter than the old drive. I'm talking 2-3x and the pitch was also much different.

Anyways, my thoughts are that large manufacturers use Newegg's reputation and high turnover as sort of an "outlet store" for older and overstocked parts.....maybe even refurbished parts. There's a reason WD was perpetually running MIRs on these drives through Newegg. I guess there's nothing wrong with this directly, but in my past experiences Newegg has always had the latest revisions, steppings and stock for the products enthusiasts love. Just thought I'd throw a heads-up to people out there who expect the same.

Or it's that an OEM drive and a retail drive are sold though different channels in different volumes.

Right, except that retail channels are longer than e-tail channels and you would think turnover would be longer at a B&M compared to a well-known e-tailer like Newegg. But 1-year old drives being sold as new? C'mon, seriously. Places like Tiger Direct were founded on buying overstock and bankruptcy inventory and selling them and steeply discounted prices, so its nothing new in the industry.

I'll give another example though. The BenQ 24" has been updated with revisions that do 1:1 lately. One e-tailer, NCIX, has gone as far as updating the firmware themselves to expedite the transition. Newegg is still shipping out old firmware Nov panels with no ETA on when updated revisions are going to ship. For a place like Newegg that used to be known to have the latest and greatest, its definitely a YMMV situation now.

My Asrock board was a fairly recent build, as well as my Lite-On SATA burners. That's my experience recently anyway.

I'm pretty sure all Samsung drives carry a 3-year warranty, but I can't find anything on Samsung's site to back that up.

Beauty has no orifices listed. Is she IDE or SATA? And why do you not know after giving your computer a name?

You have no SATA posts on your board according to the MSI model number you gave in your sig, (an MSI KT3 Ultra2). You would need to get a SATA card as EKKC suggested.

Here's the link to your board,. MSI KT3 Ultra2 specs

Samsungs warranties are a bit confusing. Their website has never stated a particular timeframe that I've ever seen. I remember looking for a warranty on their website maybe seven years ago and I never found one. The way the Samsung's wording is on their statement I linked to below is they, (Samsung), seem to negotiate a warranty length with a seller/distributor and that is the warranty you get. Unfortunately, Newegg doesn't state it anywhere on their website. You would need to call then to verify.
Samsung's Hard Drive warranty statement

I have seen Microcenter's Samsung drives advertised with 3 year warranties, but looking at their online Samsung drives, it's not clear. They have a 300 GB and a 500 GB SATA drives with no mention of warranty. Here's a refurb 250 GB Samsung SATA here with a 1 year mfg warraty, yet, here's a refurb 160 GB SATA here has a 3 year warranty. Very confusing. I would just verify by phone and make sure you keep all the paperwork in case you need warranty work.

Thanks. I don't have any open slots on the mainboard. It's full up. Guess I'll have to wait on SATA until I upgrade my mainboard. Do they have large capacity IDE drives? It's been quite a while since I built a system. Just checked it out - I ordered that MB 4.5 years ago!

Amazing, though. 1/2 terrabyte drive for $140. Ten years ago you had to pay $1000 for a 1 GB HD.

Hey guys, I got mine today and tried to check the warranty here but it says the serial number format is not recognized. I guess there's still no definitive proof of the warranty length, so use your own judgement.

Newegg's site says only 1 year. If anyone can get confirmation on their serial number, that would be great.
