Samsung 2493HM

In regards to the Samsung 2493HM not having 1:1 scaling. Does this only effect things that outputing 16:9, i.e. gaming consoles? Or will this being cause other problems? I will probably only have the monitor attached to my computer for gaming and movie watching, and presumably my video card can do the scaling for things like this, correct?

It affects anything that doesn't have a 16:10 aspect ratio. Including games that don't support widescreen.

So any old 4:3 game will be stretched???.... That seems like a major draw back then. Can I not have my video card do the scaling? ATI 1950PRO.

I've tried that before and I had no success. From what I've seen monitors that don't support 1:1 will have their video stretched. Someone can chime in if they have experienced otherwise.

I have a 2693hm and it does not have 1:1 scaling. All PS3 games however are 16:9 so it looks fine, can't even tell that its stretched a little.

But yes old games won't display correctly, although I would never want to play PS1 games on an HD screen.. it looks terrible unless you are emulating them on the PC. Never tried Ps2 games however...

Obviously anything displayed through your computer can be scaled however you want it to be.

Well I meant old PC games, not PS3 games.

So, if I'm just using it for PC gaming and PC movie watching, I will never have to worry about it, correct?

Well... how old... I know Starcraft and Diablo II do not scale and look pretty lame. I imagine there is some way to fix that as long as you are going through the video card however.

the only problem I see with scaling that is that a 640x480 box (starcraft resolution) on a 24 inch screen is pretttyy tiny

It's all in the drivers. I'm using nV's control panel to force keep the aspect ratio but that's about it. I've already tested various resolutions and scaling was never a big issue with this monitor. Drivers permitting, and as long as you don't mess things up with aspect ratio and odd or very low resolutions, things should be fine. For example a 800x600 window will scale quite well @1600x1200 (with black stripes at both sides of the screen) but I wouldn't recommend running anything below 800x600 as this would cause severe blurriness.
