I'm leaning towards the 214t, it's still massive, standard square which I don't mind (good for normal tv). Probably similar vertical height, faster response time, and quite a bit cheaper. Just made my decision harder than i thought it would be ...

sorry, more info: not many games, primarily for watching movies/tv and for design.

Your title reads "Samsung 214t vs 2405fpw"...
To me Dell 2005fpw should be more of a more comparable model (though the 2005fpw is 16x10 screen ratio @ 1680x1050 res).
The 2405fpw is btw, way much better and bigger than the 214t, cost aside. I'd never invest into a 4x3 screen (tv or pc monitor) at today standard. In most pc systems, the monitor usually outlasts its counterpart components so invest into something that has some future proof built-in. In addition, go to BB or CC and see for yourself how many 4x3 tv sets do you see for sale on the shelf? Look at the laptop models , regardless the makers, how many models are in 4x3 screen ratio? Widescreen is only way to go...Out is 4:3..IMO...Just my $0.02

Edited: Most DVD movies are available in the original native formats or 16x9 ratio so widescreen works best with DVD movies.

I know the 2405 will definitely bigger, but I also know that the 2005 has less vertical space than my 19" CRT, which I couldn't deal with, so that's why i'm comparing the 214t w/ the 2405. I'm just concerned that the response rate on the 2405 still might be too high ... and the 24" offering from samsung is still far out of my price range ...

You should compare the 244t to 2405fpw then. Both 24" widescreens. Samsung is faster and it's reported to have HDCP support so it wins. The difference between 6 ms S-PVA and 12 ms S-PVA is VERY significant. The 244t is much more expensive though.
