Had a friend's Mom come to me via said friend, her PC has a Samsung 205BW hooked up via VGA (apparently), and somehow, they say the screen "flashes" when in monitor power-save mode, and they wanted to know if the problem was with the monitor or the PC or what.

I thought that perhaps, since the GT430 is Fermi, that Windows 10 had loaded it's own newer (but not fully-supported anymore) driver, and that was the problem. I had the friend load the latest (last) GeForce driver for the GT430 (391.xx), and that SEEMED to fix it, in the immediate term, but when he went back to his Mom's, the problem had re-occurred.

I had him check Nvidia control panel, and it was still showing driver 391.xx. So I GUESS Windows 10 didn't load another newer driver?

I finally was able to find out what monitor she had, and saw that it has DVI support, so I was going to suggest that they connect it via DVI rather than VGA. I don't know if that would help, and buying a DVI cable at nearby Walmart, might be an added expense that they don't want to take on. (Although, I'm sure that I have a spare one kicking around, and I think that I left one with said friend at one point too. Heck, I picked up some 10' DVI-to-HDMI cables for $2.xx ea. recently @ Newegg, they could have one of those if they want to pick it up from me.)

If you haven't guessed, this is an older PC. It's a Gateway, slimline, vertically-oriented SFF tower, Sandy Bridge Pentium dual-core, pretty low-power, svelte, a nice little PC for a Mom. I was the original owner, then it sold it to them when I was done with it. It does not have an SSD in it, but I gave said friend an SSD to put into it, but he didn't do that yet, he's slightly techno-phobic.

Edit: Looked upp the CNet specs, it's "Vista-ready". But I can't seem to pin down the date or origination beyond that.

Could this problem, which is apparently related to waking the monitor from sleep mode, be because of failing caps in the backlight psu section? Like it's flashing, because it desperately wants to turn on?

ah ...

in windows there is PCI Express -> Link State Power Management

Try setting it to "Off"

Can be found in the power settings.

I'm surprised that monitor still actually works its like 13 years old. I use to have one of those.
