Samsung 204B & tearing

Whilst playing games like CS:S, I get HORRIBLE tearing...I hang around 60-100 FPS at 1600x1200...and this is just terrible. I never had it before with my older sony SDM-X73.

Is this something that is being cause by the moniter? Is there some way OTHER than V-Sync to fix it (when I turn v-sync on, I drop to 30FPS and then it starts to feel very laggy. Any suggestions?

V-sync + Triple Buffering is really the best way to get rid of tearing while holding non-laggy frames. That or get a CRT.

but my Sony 17" LCD doesn't have tearing...I never had experienced tearing until I got this monitor...

Well, its only 2 days old..time to return it...

....Hm.....k........(followed by a long silence with confusion)

Ok - but what effect will this have on games like Oblivion "once I get it reinstalled) since my framerate is already low - 30 FPS average?

Thanks.

Nothing,

Vsync just will not allow your frames per second to over over your sync of your monitor. Most LCDs are 60Hz so if you are not even getting 60fps now you will not see a difference.

Personly i do not see how anyone can play games without Vsync on. Vsync off is only for benchmarking where peak frames per second can reach 100fps or more.

But with VSync on, it should allow smoother game play also.

After playing CSS for a short period of time...I found that when I'd move around, it would sometimes force me to go from 60 FPS to 30 - which is exactly I do not want to bother with V-Sync...when it hits 30, especially in CSS, it is just no good for gameplay.

Any solutions?

Thanks

Well...with things as they are...I'm thinking of taking this back for the viewsonic VX20205...

Esp since I will never be able to run more recent games at native res...and it doesn't look too good at anything other than the native res.

If you've got the ability to handle 1600x1200...then its an awesome monitor...but for me, I think I might do better with the 2025...

Thanks for the help guys.

The monitor nor VSync is causing your game to goto 30fps, it is that your video card is too slow for the settings and res you have.. Maybe if you even have a slow CPU.

If you have VSync off it will just go from 80+fps to 30fps, which will just cause a bigger jump in not being smooth.

VSync and Triple Buffering will cause less tearing which as NOTHING to do with fps.

Yeah, I knew as much as it being load on my system forcing me to 30 FPS...but in CS:S, a game where I nomally got 100+ FPS (albiet, at 1280x1024, not 1600x1200), then I suddenly hit 30...I'm just returning this...it looked like a good monitor for me at the time...but since I've seen it doesn't handle lower than native resolutions well at all (which when playing oblivion is a must) in terms of image quality, and no videocard upgrade is in my near future, I'll give the VX2025 a go...

Also worth noting, the banding in this monitor was notcable...my old Sony did/does not have any banding that I noticed...so that's just another strike against the monitor in my mind.

Again, thanks guys.

BTW - I did have triple buffering on...hence why MOST of the time I held around 59-60 FPS.

i have a 204b and i think it scales rather nicely to lower resolutions. the only game i don't play at full res is GRAW and it looked fine to me at 1280x960.

It's all in your head. If you return your monitor cos of vsync that show you don't know what your doing. Its like replacing a CPU for sound issues.

I'm replacing it because my older monitors don't have issues with tearing, my new VX2025 dosn't have issues, and lastly, its a little more feasable for me to run 1650x1050 than 1600x1200.

And if you don't mind, I DO know what I am doing - I had simply forgotten of triple buffering. There is no graphics card upgrade for me in the near future, and therefor, it just isn't economical for me to hang on to a monitor I won't be able to fully use.

No prob, man. Came off rougher than what I meant it to 🙂

As others have explained to you, tearing has nothing to do with particular LCD monitor you are using. Yeah, be little boy and replace it because you are ignorant.

So tell us, how do you know it has nothing to do with the tearing? The VX2025WM is a much better choice than the 204B regardless if the 204B tore or not.

Because I have many LCDs, including that one. Problem with tearing appears when FPS is above 60, and refresh rate of monitor is 60Hz. simple as that.

But if widescreen works better for you - go ahead.
