I was shopping around for a new 19" LCD monitor, and after some debate, I decided on the Samsung 193P.

While I was looking, I stumbled across the Samsung 910T. It seems to have pretty much all of the same specs as the 193P; however, it's significantly cheaper!

I can't, for the life of me, figure out why it's almost $200 cheaper! Can anyone give me some insight? Maybe I am missing something simple here.

CubanCorona,

The main difference is that the 193P has a response time of 20 ms and the 910T has a response time of 25 ms. Everything else is pretty much the same.

I noticed that... does that really warrant a $200 price increase?

I suppose that's usually how it is when going that last mile for top-of-the-line performance. Decreasing marginal returns.

I'm not sure what price you found for the 193P, but the 910T is only $445 - $30 rebate = $415 (free shipping) at Newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/app/View...tion=24-001-161&depa=1

I am very close to ordering that myself. I was wondering if the 25 ms response time was too high, but I can't afford to pay $600 or $700 for the top of the line. The reviews are overwhelmingly positive, and the 21 inch version (210T) looked pretty good to me tonight at Best Buy (they didn't have the 19" 910T on display).

Slightly off-topic: I posted another thread about Newegg return policy in case for some reason I'm unhappy with the quality of the monitor. Do you have any insight on this? Please see the thread I made about it:

The 193p is $450 after rebate at J&R.

Should be a no brainer.

I still prefer my Sony HS94P 19" lcd for gaming though.
I've compared both and the Sony wins hands down.

If I was doing mainly desktop work or photo imaging I would go for the Samsung.

Dug, wow, thanks for the heads-up. I believe you're referring to:

Samsung 193p Silver 19" LCD -- note 20 ms response time -- $549.88 + $25.92 UPS ground shipping = $575.80 - $100 MIR (expires 1/31/05!!!) = $475.80 (price accurate and in stock as of Thurs. 1/20/05, 9:38PM):
http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=3967280

*** Note that same 193p is $689.99 + $12 s/h = $701.99 on Newegg (same access date):
http://www.newegg.com/app/View...tion=24-001-156&depa=1

Holy $shit what a price difference! I think I am ordering from J&R instead of the 25ms response time 910T from Newegg. Thank you!

CubanCorona,

I ordered the 910T from Newegg. It should be here tomorrow. I did a lot of research before buying, and as Walkure stated, the overwelming majority of people who have used the 910T gave it positive reviews. I think a lot of satisfaction with the performance of the monitor is tied to the type of connection you use with the monitor (DVI vs Analog) and the graphics card you connect to. If you use the analog connection and a weak, older graphics card, you may have issues with the sharpness of the text/images and with ghosting. On the other hand, if you use the DVI connection in conjunction with a modern graphics card, people seem to be very happy with the monitor and report little to no ghosting in games or video playback.

I am looking forward to trying out the 910T monitor as soon as it arrives. I am also looking forward to reclaiming some of my desk space from the 21" CRT I am currently using.

I saw that price and figured it must be refurbished. I can't beleive it's so low!

Dug, have you tested the 193P first hand? Your comment is causing me to re-think my decision because that Sony was my other top choice.

Dug and CubanCorona, if I'm correct, you're referring to the Sony SDM-HS94 19inch silver Flat Panel LCD:
http://www.maincomp.com/shop/product.jsp?id=830&pw=
(sorry don't know if anywhere else has it cheaper, that's all that came up on Pricewatch)

With its 12ms response time, it sounds like it might have the edge for gaming. Though I do love gaming, I spend much more time programming, typing stuff, and posting on AnandTech, so text quality is my priority. So go with the Samsung 193p from J&R then?

Thank you.

If you watch the Hot Deals forum a clear trend is apparent; LCD prices are falling. Decent quality 19"ers are commonly available for under $500, often times closer to $400.

Some things to keep in mind though, response times posted by manufacturers are often optimistic and it's impossible to have everything in a LCD. For example, in order to get the fast response time gamers like, color depth and viewing angles are sacrificed. One thing seems to be a constant though; almost all LCD's have razor sharp text.

Good luck.

Whew, boy, was I pissed when I went back to JR.com this morning to try to order the Samsung 193p. It has gone up from $549.88 to $599.99!!! Thing is, I was in the middle of checking out on their website at about 2:30AM central time (3:30 EST for them, based in NY), and their site went down for maintenance.

So I called customer service, got a rep within 2 seconds, asked if they would honor last night's price, and it was no problem at all. Very helpful service, and I get this STEAL of a price!

The only other option that was very much pushing my budget too high was the Viewsonic VP912b ( http://www.amazon.com/exec/obi...s=electronics&n=507846 ), but I just can't justfiy another $100, even if it does have 12 ms response time. I certainly love gaming, but heck, I haven't even purchased a new game in the last 3 years because my system couldn't handle them anymore. Now I've finally got all the parts (3200+ winchester, gig RAM, 6600GT video card, etc), I can get back in the game! (but my main use of the monitor will be a lot of text work for school / personal use).

Hope it works out! And anyone else please feel free to give J&R the sob story about the price change; try your luck, hehe.

I just ordered the 193P from JR! They were willing to honor last nights price for me as well. Can't ask for anything more than that!

Right on CubanCorona, I hope we end up liking the monitors! For that price, I think I can't complain too much...

Yes I have used the 193p first hand. It is probably the best 19" monitor out there.
But there is ghosting when playing games. (At least its noticable compared to the Sony)

I really like the Sony's Xbrite. It makes the screen look like a CRT and it's much brighter than a regular LCD while keeping the contrast in check. Games are incredible on it, and its the only LCD that could make me switch from my CRT.
Note that I am talking about the 12ms panel and not their 25ms panel. They have two models that look identical but with different panels.

If I did not game as my primary use for the computer then I would get the Samsung over the Sony.

My Samsung 193p is shipped, I got my UPS Ground tracking #.... just left NY 2 hours ago, on its way to Chicago, scheduled arrival next Wednesday. I bet they could make it Tuesday even. :)

Thank you J&R! First time purchase here, couldn't be better.

I got my 193P from J&R about a week ago. There is a bit of ghosting, though it is hard to notice and I only see it when I am in a really heavy round of UT2K4. I think you will be hard pressed to find a better all around 19" LCD. Congrats on the purchase and enjoy!

Glad to hear you like your Sony DUG, I am currently deciding between the model you have and the Viewsonic VP912b. How is the backlight bleeding?

I'm also looking at 19" lcds. Narrowed it down to 193p, Viewsonic VP912b, Sony SDM-HS94P and Dell 1905P. My concern about ordering is "dead pixels" and return policies. I gather that none will take them back and you are left to argue with the manufacturer. Any suggestions on how to handle?

Check it out!

I ordered mine on Friday 1/21, and just tonight (Monday 1/24) it showed up at the local UPS sort facility near my house (according to tracking on UPS.com). Should be here tomorrow, then I can report performance (assuming all my other new components are hooked up right... haven't even tested for POST yet).

DCW ... Samsung will accept a return and test for dead pixels. If there are too many (a certain number in a certain area) they will replace the monitor. Warranty is 1 year in Canada.

We just got a buttload 910Ts at work, gonna try em out today. According to Samsung its a 3 year warranty and 8 or more dead pixels. Which kinda sux (the pixel part) I believe if even one dead pixel is there it should be returnable, but eight? Thats crazy! You know how crappy 7 dead pixels would look?
