Samsung 173T Contrast Ratio (False Advertising?)

I recently picked up a Samsung 173T because it had a 700:1 contrast ratio and DVI.

Now I was reading reviews on the monitor and one review said that it actually only has a 450:1 contrast ratio. The review is here, DesignTechnica.

It mentions that the panels in the 173T available at retailers only have 450:1 while review units were 700:1. Can anyone bring some insite into this?

What's the difference supposed to be between the 172T (or whatever the newest 172 flavor is) and the 173?

The 173T has analog and DVI inputs, but a lower contrast ratio than the 172T (450:1 compared with 700:1).

Did the store advertise it as 700:1 when you bought it? If thats the case I assume it would be false advertising, however its possable they got their hands on some 173T's with the PVA panel that has the 700:1 contrast ratio.
Sounds fishy to me. Good luck.

Well you have one in your hands... what IS the contrast ratio of IT? Maybe there is an early and a late production model?

Can you tell a difference?

I have no idea... I don't know what 450:1 or 700:1 is supposed to look like. If the monitor is supposed to be even better (if it did have the advertised specs), then I kind of feel cheated.

But that's the only place I've run into that mentioned the constrast thing.

You just confirmed my point. You are worried sick about not having something that you dont even know if you dont have it. 🙂

If you love the monitor and its performance dont worry about it. That site you linked to has a review of what THEY THINK they know, but Samsung has given out the official specification. Who you gonna believe? And as you said you wouldnt know it even if you had it. 🙂

Enjoy your monitor and believe the official manufacturer specs unless you can prove otherwise.

Hi,

I made a comment about this a while. The same thing happened with the 192T; when we had our review sample it was 450:1 contrast ratio, but now samsung changed the spec to 700:1. And its not a "we think we know", it was printed in the manual and the original spec sheets.

Anyways, it seems like pretty much all the manufacturers are defaulting on valid specifications. There is no way in hell these monitors product 700:1 contrast ratios. Viewsonic got in trouble for doing this a year ago, but they not only changed their specs from 600:1 to 450:1, but now most of those monitors that were changed are again 600:1!

Its total marchitecture BS. About the only spec you can still believe is brightness, and thats usually about 30 nits too high anyway!!!
