Okay, so I finally decided to get my first LCD monitor. I have a great 19" flat screen CRT and I have no complaints about the picture quality apart from two things: the image looks CONCAVE, not flat. And there are some geometry problems that all flat screen CRT's have. The concave thing is driving me crazy. Everyone says "you'll get used to it" but I never did. People say that after one week it will look flat to you but I've had it for 2 years now it is STILL looks concave to me. Of course, that is not the only reason why I'm getting an LCD. I'm completely aware of all pros and cons of the LCD and CRT technologies so I'll just get to the point:
DECIDING WHICH LCD MONITOR TO BUY IS FRUSTRATING!!!
Sorry for the caps, but it really is. Some reviews say "that monitor ghosts" and some say "there is no ghosting at all". Same goes for every other picture parameter like brightness, contrast and color quality. I don't know whom to trust anymore. It seems that some people are praising some monitors just because they bought them and are not being completely honest. Now, I wouldn't call myself a "gamer" by any means but I do play games like GTA and Operation Flashpoint sometimes and wouldn't be happy at all to see a lot of ghosting. After reading literally hundreds of reviews on the internet and computer magazines, I finally decided to get the Samsung 172X. Then I read a Samsung 173P review where some guy said he bought the 172X first and because of it's "ATROCIOUS viewing angles" returned it and got the 173P instead. He also mentioned that there was "no ghosting whatsoever" on the 173P. Obviously the 173P has a better picture quality overall but is it really that much better than the 172X? The money is not really a problem. I just want a good monitor that CAN occasionally run some games without too much ghosting.
So, I've got a couple of questions to people who own either the 172X or the 173P and I want HONEST answers:
1. Is the viewing angle on the 172X really that bad? That guy that reviewed the 173P said that even when looking from dead on you can see the difference in brightness between the top and bottom side of the screen. Is that true?
2. Is ghosting on the 173P really that bad? I read somewhere that it doesn't ghost at all but blurrs in all games. What the hell is that supposed to mean?
3. Are the colors on the 172X really washed out? I mean, it's a 6-bit screen and it can't compete with MVA/PVA matrixes but is it as bad as some people say it is? I just read in some computer magazine that the 172X has great colors but some review on the internet said the colors were poor since it's a 6-bit panel. Are 6-bit panels THAT much worse that the 8-bit ones?
4. This isn't really a question about monitor but is there anywhere a picture of the 172X in dark? I would like to see it's level of black which is supposed to be good but still worse than PVA matrixes.
Thanks for all the answers. Sorry for the long post and excuse any grammar and spelling mistakes. English is not my native language
