Well, I did it. I made the jump I never thought I would make. I decided to go LCD over CRT for my new gaming machine!

*GASP!*

I just decided and ordered a Samsung 172X from Newegg for a good price of $539. I was stuck for a few days reading countless reviews of the Samsung and Dell 2001FP and finally chose the Samsung. I just couldnt justify the $999 for the Dell, and the fact that I took it upon myself to hook up a 172X at Best Buy up to one of their machines, and test it out.

To many reviews mentioned the "Screen Door" effect of the Dell and the known bug with nVidia cards over not waking up from hibernate. Those reasons, and the fact I dont get a chance to see how the Dell looks before I part with my money, even if I could have returned it.

So, does anyone else have this model and play games on it? Hows it working for you?

Soon as Newegg starts getting the 6800GT in stock, ill have my machine finished and fllying high playing Doom 3.

A couple things

1) The 2001fp can regularly be had for around $750
2) Your local Best Buy had the monitor, but you didn't buy it there? You could have inspected it for dead pixels before you even bought it. Newegg won't take it back unless there's 8 dead pixels.
3) The 172x gets mixed reviews. Mainly it's known for being overpriced.

Hope you like it though. :D

well i cant say anything about the 172X.

i recently got a sharp LL-191A-B 19" 16ms with the LG Phillips panel [similar to the 2001FP, just smaller] from frys for $500 down from $730. i considered the 172X and was going to get it, but the extra 2 inches and for less got me. its only analog, not a problem for me. after having it for awhile and playing many an FPS the one thing i would advise is that you now make use of Vsync. it seems to make the image much crisper. i tried it on and off, and i noticed an image quality improvement. could be me, but ive heard a few others comment on it. it took me a few days to adjust to the refresh rate change and the way LCDs display over CRTs. i think i also WAY over analyzed the IQ to the point that i was getting headaches. but after a few days it went away and im fragging happily again. ive also heard people say to turn on ClearType under *right-click* properties-appearance-effects, ive had ClearType on since ive had XP so im not sure if its an LCD thing or just to make the letters look correct.

I don't think there's anything mixed in the many reviews I read. Here's what I got out of the reviews:

-Best monitor for gaming, even better than the FP2001, due to it's 12ms refresh rate. Very little ghosting, if any. Digital is beautiful.
-Very sharp and very high contrast ratio and brightness
-Very well designed with the dual-swivel design
-Colours can be quite washed out, especially in extremely vibrant situations, due to it being a 6-bit LCD and not an 8-bit. Instead of "truly" being able to display 16 million colours at once, it is more like 262,000 colours at once.

Personally, I have a 19" Samsung 191T and I love it, despite the ghosting in fast-paced games. I run dual monitors and wouldn't play any FPSes on an LCD myself - not until 0ms reponse time LCD's ;) . By the way, that is an impossiblilty - 0ms on an LCD (using current technology anyway).

For text and surfing/browsing, LCD's cannot be beaten, IMO.

I wouldnt pay over 500 for a 17" LCD. You can get a great gaming LCD 17" for around $400.
