Samsung 171p, 170T Opinions?

I'm getting ready to make a big move and I wanted to lighten my load by getting rid of the 19" CRT and going with a 17" LCD.

Has anyone here actually gotten to see a Samsung 171p up close and personal? Is it all that it hyped up to be. The specs seem to be impressive but I'd like to hear from someone.

That one is kind of expensive. What about the 170T? Both are DVI monitors which is what I really want. I looked at the specs on the 170T at Samsung's site, but I can't seem to find any information on the pixel refresh. I do some casual gaming, so I really want a high quality LCD. I know they won't be perfect, but I want the best possible.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Yeah... I saw that review... that is what has me wondering... However, I have yet to hear from anyone besides the magazines anything about this monitor. I was just wondering if anyone had some experience with them.

Yes, I'm interested also. Monitor Outlet has the 151P in stock now with the 171P suposedly arriving in about two weeks. I notice on the speck sheet that it has a DVD-D connector on the digital input cable. What video card will you be using with it?

I have a Ti200 that I was planning on using for now. Of course... by the time this monitor becomes available, that may be upgraded as well. :)

yeah, I've been waiting on the 171P for a while now.
I also want to make the switch from CRT to LCD but want the BEST 17" LCD!

Right now, it looks like it's the 171P. It's got super nice looks, small footprint, and great specs!
The only thing that bothers me is that review on pcmag.
Even though it got a good review, they still mention there is an "average" amount of ghosting!
For that much money and with those specs, I'd expect little to no ghosting.

Anybody got one yet???
Any other 17" LCD's one can recommend?

Oh, and I don't want a WHITE or IVORY LCD. heh
Samsung LCD's are all nice looking (excluding the white ones)

I'll bet that either they are measuring extreme circumstances. (ie- white objects being dragged accross a black background)
Or they didn't have the contrast set correctely. Therefore seeing more 'ghosting'

The 171p will be the one to get. It's just very expensive and hard to get because its not readily available in the retail market.

I have the 170T and I think it is the best investment for my computer. It does have a few dead pixils, but they are so small I only notice it if I'm REALLY close to the monitor on a black backgound. What is the difference between the 170T and the 171P?

jetblack,
how good is your monitor with video?

I'm also one waiting for the 171P but after reading yet another review on the 170T last night with "NO CONS"
I'm now considering this model.

The review states that there is no motion blur with this LCD and image motion quality is comparable to that of CRT displays.
The 170T is rated to have the best image quality of ANY LCD currently available.

So now I'm really deciding.

The problem is that the pcmag review on the 171P states that it has "average" motion blur. (even though it got a good review) ???
IF the 171P has a display as good as the one on the 170T, then I'll get it. If not, I'm going to have to go with the 170T.

pookieguy,

I've watched DVD and TV on this monitor and it is good. I only notice blur when a white box is on a black background, so unless you are playing pong with your computer, this monitor is very good. About the blur, this is the only LCD I've seen up close and personal, so there might be motion blur but I don't notice it. If I've seen a bad LCD, then I might really know what the motion blur is. Stand alone LCDs are better than laptop screens, though. Windows have never looked better. :)

I just bought and installed a 181T for my boss. It looks very nice. Does the 171P raise and lower on the stand? That's one thing I really like about the 181T. I need my monitor screen to be about 11" from my desk top, so height adjustment is important to me. Right now I have my CRT on an empty desktop case just to get it raised up. I'm not sure if is worth an extra $300 for the difference of a 17 and 18 inch LCD though.

To me, the pivot feature is not that important. It's funny that Samsung included the Pivot software with the 181T even though it doesn't have that type of stand. I suppose you could use one of those arm thingys though.

<edit> it appears that the 171p and the 181t are priced about the same. (about $1000) If so, I would definetly go with the 181t.

I hope you're getting them for substantially less than the ~$1000 19" Viewsonic VG191, which has almost exactly the same specs but is 2" bigger and has a 25ms total average response time.

relayer,
how does the 1280x1024 resolution look on the 181T ??
I don't think I'll go above a 17" LCD because I would think the 1280x1024 resolution is not high enough for a 18" or 19" LCD.
Everything must look HUGE right?

The thin bezel on the 181T is nice, but the fact that it only goes up to 1280x1024 is pretty bad.
Heck, even all the 19" LCD's have this max resolution. (with the exception of a couple of viewsonic displays)

It isn't really huge. I use 1024x768 on a 19" CRT though. The user who uses the LCD likes 800x600, so it is set at 1280x1024 and the font size is cranked up to 150%. I thought the icons and everything was a little too small at 1280x1024 at 100%.

Samsung
191T = $1100
I can get a 181T for $988
171P = $950
171B = $735

Viewsonic
VG191b = $1250
VG181 = $940
VG171 = $750

I suppose a 17" would be the best bang for the buck at around $750.

There's a brand new review of the 181T by pcstats! go check it out.
I was waiting for another review for this model!

It's another positive one.

Now I'm deciding between the 181T and the 171P ????

hmm...

None of these reviewers mention anything about the 171T/181T with 3D games or any games for that matter. I use to own the 170T and it couldn't handle 3D games. It seemed if the game was played in slow motion since the response time wasn't adequate to handle FPS.
I sold the 170T and bougth the Sony SDM-N80 Flat Panel and the 3D games ran much smoother and very playable. I've owned the N80 since last summer and have been extremely satisfied but with the exception of its motion blur -- Sony monitors tend to display motion blur when you visit a website with black background and scroll up and down. My Sony VAIO laptop even displays the same visual motion blur (ghosting).

Now I'm deciding whether to give Samsung another chance with the release of their new 181T or 191T. How does it run with first person shooters?
