i still contend that sampras is the greatest tennis player of all time. Agassi is a contender also. If pete can win 1 of 3 sets vs federer and take the 3rd set to the limit, 10 yrs after he retired, than i'd say, in his prime, he would be at least as good as federer is in his prime.

I highly doubt that Federer went all out in that match and only came out on top by that score. And as much as I'd like to agree with you on the ordeal of Sampras beating Federer with both being in their prime, I can't do that either.

I would have loved to see that. I saw Agassi in 2006 and Federer last year at the US Open.

so, they were about even. federer didn't go all out, sampras was way past his prime.

i still say, sampras in his prime gives federer a much better game.

definitely the two greatest ever...it's too early to tell about federer. if he wins the french, and passes sampras grand slam record, i might have to say federer is the best ever. we can only dream how things would have turned out if they played in the same generation :)

I saw this was on TV recently but my TiVo deceived me because it turns out I didn't have the channel. I wasn't really sure what it was until after the fact. Pretty cool event for charity.

I love Pete Sampras but I can't see how anyone could content with Federer playing at his best.

I had tickets for this and didn't go. I wish I did :(

I did watch it on Tivo. I know they went to 3 sets and all but Federer was playing at about 50% pace. First of all the surface was a joke and worked in favor of Sampras. Second, Fed plays at low power mode when he doesn't care too much about the event. He won't stress or risk injury and frankly, doesn't seem to care much. This has been very evident in his low profile tournament performances. Third, it was obvious that Fed was trying to make it sporting. If anyone has watched Fed play for real you know he hits insane angles and shots and doesn't loaf balls back to the middle like he did for Pistol Pete.

The match was exhibition and entertainment. Not a test of skill and athleticism, well at least not for Fed :p
I miss Sampras but he's in no shape to compete with the current world champ and arguably best player of all time. If both players were in their prime, I'd have a hard time thinking Pete could beat Fed in anything other then grass.

I think its silly to compare players of different eras. Lets just say that they are the best players of their eras and leave it at that.

Although currently I think Federer's crown is being heavily chased by a lot of people.

jock-itch is the only major contender. Novak is on a tear and he has the game and growth potential. I love Nadal but his dominance is not multidimensional like Novak is showing.

I agree with you there but both Nadal and Novak are young so time will tell. And still, Nadal's dominance on clay is a stranglehold right now.
