So what's with all this P4/Sledgehammer and higher spec video cards etc ... at the end of the day there's no app or game TODAY ... RIGHT NOW that'll take adavantage of this technology.

Your average everyday window app is not gonna run any faster (e.g. Word)

And if there was an app capable of taking advantage of this technology by then we'll be crying for more ...

So until games + apps can take advantage of this technology ... I'm happy with my Duron 700 @ 1Ghz + 64Mb DDR Geforce 2 GTS 🙂

I've just finished spending the better part of my afternoon waiting for my workstation (and my two neighboring co-workers who took the day off to go skiing) to finish crunching on data. Maybe your apps don't require faster processors, but I'm currently running mine on three different machines and it's taking hours.

Chip design needs way faster computers.

I agree, I can't afford the Intel P4 right now, but I could certainly put it to good use crunching data. If you're a gamer, yeah, there probably won't be anything that requires the highest-end machine as most games are made for the common-denominator/midrange systems, but if you develop media, or worth with large sets of data, then you'll appreciate ANY speed improvement, including but not limited to: Memory Bandwidth, PCI Bandwidth(64bit PCI.. yum), and FPU performance to name a few...

But, I'll personally wait for the P4 to finally settle on a socket size that sticks for at least a year, and decide which chip overclocks the best. I try to wait and upgrade when the processor is about double the speed of the one I'm using currently. For P4s, this looks like in the 2.3 - 2.5ghz range. Hope it's not too long of a wait!

Well, no, Ruckb. Maybe when we get Itanium systems shipping in high volume, but not yet.

We are currently using HP J6000's and C3600 (I have a C3600).
