samba + win2k?

new to the linux world.. just playin around really. I was reading through some of the stuff, and it seems like samba + win2k don't work too well? Anyone have a site specific to this? Granted, i haven't gotten it to work w/ windows98 yet either... but still, i want to check it out 🙂

Try www.samba.org
They might have a little info about samba... I believe you need v2.2.x for it to work with win2k. MS decided the specs for Kerberos V(?) were not good enough and mucked around with it....

Just to make sure you are forewarned, if you try to use Samba as a PDC for Win2k boxes with sp2, you might run into problems. When sp2 was released, things were apperently changed enough to prevent joining a Samba 2.2.0 controled domain.

To get around this, you could download the current Samba 2.2 development code via CVS and compile it yourself. I have gotten Samba 2.2 (running on FreeBSD) working as a PDC for Win2k sp2 boxes this way.

Because you are new to Linux, and also because you might not like using development code, you could just wait until 2.2.1 is released with the sp2 compatibility fixes.

However, If you don't have any intention of using Samba as a PDC, then please ignore everything that I have just written. 😉

thanks, i'll look into it, I am using sp2... pdc?? personal domain controller? heh.. yes i know very little 🙂

Oh, yeah I went to the samba site, that's why I asked the question, i ran across something regarding NT + samba...

and russ, thanks, that looks like it's a great proggy.. time to install 😀

The coolest thing about Webmin is that after you've used it for configuration, you can take a look at the associated files and see the changes. Great way to learn Linux - or the other OSs it supports.😀

It's also nice to be able to admin my server from any Windows box in the shop.

Just make sure that if you have it bound to a WAN address, you use a very strong password. On mine, I have it bound to the secondary NIC on a LAN address.

heh, i dunno if i'll ever learn linux.. i just wanna set up a little web server and a mail server maybe.. so i can get me my own email addy 😛
