Samba Server Appliance

Is there a minimal Linux distribution out there that can function as a Samba server for a home network?

I've gotten Redhat 9 to work fine with it's minimal install option, but it's still rather large. I'd like to be able to do the following:

Easily create shares
Automatically backup files to an external USB 2.0 drive or a second hard drive
Span disks (OS on primary drive and shares spread across two or more drives)

I can probably proceed with Redhat or one of the many other distribs, but my goal is to build a server appliance of sorts for stability, ease of use, backup, and management.

Any suggestions?
