i want to set up a fileserver using linux (probably ubuntu cuz i have a billion of these discs floating around and im a n00b) and samba but I dont want to keep my fileserver on all the time, just when i need it. this brings up the question does linux(ubuntu) (or samba...i dont really know which category this falls into) support wake on lan? it would be sweet if i could wake it when needed.

I've never done wake on lan, but I would assume it's more hardware support than anything. You would probalby need to get suspend to RAM working in Linux, which can be problematic with certain hardware, but getting it to wake up will be the responsibility of the NIC and the motherboard firmware.
