Samba for the noob

Where can I find instructions or a tutorial or something to set up samba on RedHat Linux 7.3 that can be understood by a noob? I want to be able to communicate between my Linux and Windows machines.

check the faq's, there is a nice bit in there about samba.
Link
The big thing to remember is to have the same users, with the same passwords, in your smbpasswd file.
If you have users log on to the windows machines, it can be pretty cool, with mapped drives and private folders, as well as a public folder that anyone can get into for filesharing.
If you get it going, and need a smb.conf file to use for a model, shoot me a pm or email.

Is there any smb.conf file that you can just pluck in there with minimal changes and have it work? I've got an XP box going to RH7.3. I think it came with samba but samba isn't running as one of the services.

yes, more or less. you make the conf file to suit your needs. I have a public folder, adn several private ones for users on the network. Tomorrow I'll copy and edit mine down to a generic form, and send you a PM.

Samba itself ships with /etc/samba/smb.conf-sample. RedHat may have removed it, but it should still be there somewhere. If you've got locate/slocate, try {s}locate smb.conf-sample.

You may wanna think about installing "SWAT" to ease your samba configuration process

IIRC, swat is sometimes installed by default with samba.

Devshed has an ok tutorial for samba in their administration section.

If you are doing the PDC thing, search for samba PDC on google. Follow the link with ibm in the name. That is an _excellent_ tutorial on setting up a PDC. also of course use the newsgroups as required.
