SAMBA 4 Technology Preview 1

Here is a nice article on the latest info for SAMBA 4 (that I have found). It's from the Linux.conf.au in January about a conference with Andrew Tridge.

In particular, this was my favorite part:
Microsoft has introduced a new protocol - SMB2 - with the latest Vista technology preview, and the boys on the Samba team are having more fun than they've had since the 90's reverse-engineering it (it's just network protocol analysis - nothing illegal), and they have released their implementation, in Samba 4 technology preview, before Microsoft. Booyakasha!

wow...

don't they have to release source for Vista anyway? at least for EU contries? I guess if they release it and it's not commented/messy then reverse engineering might be easier.

Excited for Samba4 btw...going to have to put it on one of my Gentoo boxes (I'm sure they will be first with package management for it) and give it a whirl.

The documentation and source code is probably released under a license that makes it impossible to use with GPL'd software.

But it doesn't realy matter much. Samba guys pretty much know more about it then most Microsoft programmers.

See episode 123 from 'The Linux Link Tech Show'. It's a very low-budget podcast made by some Linux fanboys. Entertaining, at least to me. On 123 they interview the head Samba guy were he talks about SMB2 and some other samba stuff.

The actual interview starts 24 minutes into the show if you want to skip them B.S-ing. 😉

Also mentions a bit why NFS sucks.

Little did we know we'd blundered into one of the areas of windows that was written by summer students, not really good summer students, who'd rather be doing something else, cause the printing code in windows is a nightmare. Anyway, it works now

lmao, thanks for the link drag

There's an interview with a Samba developer in a recent (last month?) Linux magazine. If I could find it (must be at home...) I'd tell you which one. 😛
