Sam Bowie out for the year with fractured patella (oops, I mean Greg Oden)

Oden taken off floor on stretcher

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Portland Trail Blazers center Greg Oden was taken off the court on a stretcher after an apparent knee injury in the first quarter of the Trail Blazers' game against the Houston Rockets on Saturday night.

Oden dropped to the floor clutching his left knee and grimacing after colliding with a driving Aaron Brooks midway through the first quarter.

He was almost immediately surrounded by trainers and physicians. The crowd at the Rose Garden stood and chanted "Oden! Oden!"

The game was stopped for some 7 minutes. Finally, Oden was gently moved to a stretcher and wheeled from the court. The Blazers said he would undergo an MRI but further details were not available.

Oden, the No. 1 pick in the 2007 NBA draft out of Ohio State, has been plagued by injuries for his entire NBA career.

The 7-footer missed his rookie season after undergoing microfracture surgery on his right knee. Last season, Oden sat out six games after injuring his right foot in the season opener against the Lakers, then missed 14 games after the All-Star break with a bone chip in his left knee. He finished the season averaging 8.9 points and 7 rebounds.

Oden lost weight during the offseason and was averaging 11.7 points and 8.8 rebounds this season as a starter.

The Blazers have been beset by injuries. Starting forward Nicolas Batum needed shoulder surgery just before the opener. Fellow forward Travis Outlaw fractured his foot in mid-November and required surgery.

Forward Rudy Fernandez was out of Saturday night's game with sciatic pain and set to undergo an MRI. It was uncertain if he would be with the team on an upcoming four-game road trip starting with the Knicks on Monday.

Even coach Nate McMillan was set to undergo surgery Monday after rupturing his right Achilles tendon during practice.

The coach was participating in practice because the team is so short-handed. He will miss the team's upcoming road trip, replaced by assistant coach Dean Demopoulos.

Sorry to hear it, Sam.

At least Sam Bowie played his rookie season. Hell he was on the All-Rookie Team but Greg Oden is just well, sucks to be Portland. This guy is just so injury prone already. I don't think he'll ever amount to anything.

He's gotta have some calcium deficient bones or something. I just saw the highlight and he didn't look to come down particularly awkward or anything. Anything can happen when you're that big though.

It's really too bad. He seems to be a great guy, intelligent and humble, I'd love to see him do well, but these injuries are adding up quickly.

Here is something to look at... Yao, Ilgauskis, and now Oden share very similar problems... when YOUNG they had major injuries/problems yet Z still plays... hopefully Oden and Yao can do this as well.

Yep. First impression, he looks like the least friendly guy on the court, but is funny and an all around good guy.

He was playing really well this year too.

Just knew ATOT would make some cracks about him. Fuck everyone who does.

All this means is we wont have to give him a max contract when the time comes around. Oden is the best offensive AND defensive player on the Blazers according to both Hollinger and Synergy stats. One of the best in the NBA today.

No doubt this will lessen the salary pressure next year, finally...(two words: Darius Miles 😀 )

Feel ya tho, this is definitely a huge blow to the blazers this year, but as for productivity, he still had a long ways to go in learning how to stay on the court (aka foul trouble.)

Poor guy ... can't stay healthy. Those question marks apparently were valid. Hope he returns, as I'd love to take a road trip to see the blazers.

if it means anything, I sent a text to the Blazers Talking Ball postgame show. They all agreed it would have a serious effect on the $$ he gets from now on.

It was good to get a response on my first text in to the show.

So your best player goes down for the rest of the year and your happy because it will save you money next year??

You see, unlike most ATOT members, I look for the bright side in anything I can. There is no reason to be all negative Nancy on everything. Other positives on this:

-His right knee will seriously be fully recovered. It had a much more serious surgery the year before last. The injury he has right now actually is NOT that serious. you just have a one-time recovery time. Microfracture surgery (his right knee) takes many years to get 100% recovery. By playoff time he'll be just fine to play. If he sits during that, watch out. For sure he will be recovered.

-Portland already has a legit center in Joel Przybilla. The best rebounder off the bench in the NBA and a serious shotblocker. He was our starter. He is being paid a starter salary so might as well use it up while we have him.

-Oden will come back with even more desire. For sure. Every other team might not look for him except Portland.

We weren't going to be in the finals this year anyway. We have an even better team now than the one we had last year. We have Andre Miller, which is an upgrade from Sergio Rodriguez.

Portland has some good talent. I'm not sure why they don't push the ball more like the mavs, suns, and rockets? I'm not sure about Blake being a starter though. He is a starter right?

Blake is a solid starter, sans defense. Portland runs a very odd but simple offense. Literally it's something McMillan brewed up on his own. Just simple back cuts for the 2/3 guards mixed with Isolation here and there. Somehow it is the most efficient offense in the league the past two years. Points per possession is right up there.

Miller was a good idea, but he's not working out as planned. He is much more of a scorer than passer. He makes great lob passes, but that's about it. No doubt i'd take miller a million times over allen iverson, and Portland doesn't need another scorer. Once the holidays are through and many players come back from the injury list, there will be too many offensive players around. Batum, Outlaw, Fernandez, Roy, Aldridge, Webster, Miller, Bayless and Blake all are capable 24 point scorers. The team just needs to actually play some team defense. The win over Houston showed it's possible without Oden.

The Sam Bowie comparison was clever however I think there is one other person that would be even more appropriate as a comparison.... GLASS JOE!!!
