The makers of Sam Adams are irritated because another person who happens to be named Sam Adams has infringed on their brand with the name of his website. This isn't your ordinary domain-hijacking squabble. Sam Adams is a real, honest-to-goodness person and a politician who is running for mayor in Portland, Oregon.

It's not Sam Adams' fault that he's named Sam Adams. Given his chosen career in politics, a name like that is a gift that he should work as hard as possible. But Boston Beer Co., who brews Sam Adams, sent a cease-and-desist order.

Sam Adams of Portland isn't taking it lying down. According to the AP via Universal Hub, which has a rousing comment thread on the subject, Sam Adams the candidate said that "he's amused by the flap, pointing out that while Boston Beer claims to have owned the Sam Adams trademark since 1984, he's owned it since he was born in 1963."

Since Adams vs. Adams has entered the news, a rep for Sam Adams said "she is willing to discuss Adams' use of his name on his Web sites." Bostonist loves its Sam Adams, but Sam Adams of Portland can use that name because it's his name!

And what would Sam Adams--as in Sam Adams, the revolutionary--do in this case? If he were alive and well, the legendary "Son of Liberty" would likely tell Boston Beer Co. to dump the beer that bears his name in the harbor. Some Portland radio DJs echoed that sentiment by airing a listener who poured a bottle of Sam Adams in the toilet.*

Sam Adams of Portland isn't even using a Web domain that would cause a problem to Sam Adams the beer. The domain is www.samforpdx.com, and he's actually kinda dreamy as far as politicians go. How about a compromise--Sam Adams can release a special batch with the Clark-Kentish face of Sam Adams PDX on the label?

Update: Someone from 1190 KEX News Radio in Portland, OR, just let us know that, while Sam Adams, Mayoral Candidate, isn't using a domain that would annoy Sam Adams, Beer, this very second, his current website "will likely be moved" to www.samadamsformayor.com. And if he wins, his domain will be www.mayorsamadams.com. You could not buy this kind of publicity.

hahahahahha guess they should have looked and seen if the guy was real before htey started complaining.

though the guy running for mayor is getting a LOT of free publicity.

i read another article about this and the representative from Sam Adams Beer Co. admitted that they weren't even aware that the guy they sued was (1) named Sam Adams and (2) was running for mayor. they just reflexively sued when finding a domain that contained the name Sam Adams.
