i have some clothes i would like to donate because i won't be wearing them anymore. can i take them to a Salvation Army place and donate them? do humane societies or animal shelters take those kinds of donations?

i don't have money to give but i do have old clothes i'd like to donate. i thought that would be better than throwing them away. i'm asking because i've never donated to a charity place before. also, can you donate other items like books or old tv?

TIA everybody!

Salvation Army, Goodwill, many other charities that run thrift shops will take old clothes in good condition, (some will even take torn/stained and sell them for rags) they will also take books, household goods, furniture & electronics that are in good working condition, but few will take mattresses anymore.

Oh yeah, I forgot...get a reciept. You can take the donations as a tax deduction, and best of all, YOU get to decide how much the stuff is worth...but the IRS expects you to assess a fair value for them...based on how much you would pay for the same goods in such a store, NOT what you initially paid for them...

Up to $500 you don't need itemized reciepts. After that, you better hang on to them. I'm making a monster trip to Goodwill soon.

If you don't want to go through the hassle of dropping off your clothes, you may be able to schedule a Salvation Army pickup at your home. You can check there website for details.

I donate to the local veteran's association.

They will take pretty much anything... I've given clothes, furniture, old tvs and PCs (that still work). Hell I even donated a car once when I didn't think the trade in value was worth more than donating it to someone who could use it. They even come and pick up the items I'm donating so I don't have to do anything but set it outside.

They call me every couple of weeks to see if there is anything I'd like to donate, but they don't press/force anything... it is a very courteous call.

I highly recommend contacting them, our veterans don't get enough assistance after wars... regardless of whether or not you supported the war.

What's the association? Is that Purple Heart, or is that just a catchy name? Being a vet that's well established I'd like to help out some fellow vets.

thanks for all the replies! it's pretty cool that it's that easy to donate... and possibly a tax deduction. although for me, i think i'm just taking the standard deduction this year. anyway, i will contact the SA and the VA.

thanks again!

I give my stuff to AmVets. They have a door to door pick up every month. Just call em up, put it on the porch and they get it.

I was thinking the same thing a while ago, especially since i know men in Brixton who have served well and cannot afford to clothe their children, that is a damn disgrace, in our case we could just do it locally because if we did it nationally we'd have to apply for it.

So we did the whole shebang in Brixton and got enough to deal with heating and housing and food for everyone and it took us two months to do it.

I'm not up there now, i'm in Germany waiting for my kids to wake up but from the reports it's getting colder and i'm feeling pretty good knowing i helped fix that.
