salvation army, thrift store clothing. Do they put it in some super washer?

or a normal washer or none at all? We went to one during lunch and I told my coworker they probably have a heavy duty washer so there might not be a need to wash it again. Coworker thought they just sorted the fair to good stuff and bring it in and hang it up.

They probably do. It would look pretty bad on them if they were selling dirty clothes. Wouldn't hurt to give it a quick run through the wash before you wear it though. Lord knows who's been trying it on in the store.

The odor of any thrift store I've ever been into suggests otherwise. Not that it really matters to me -- if I'm ever in there, I'm looking for old Commodore hardware.

(edit: guess I have to listen to some Iron Maiden today)

Always wash secondhand clothes before wearing. Some stores may wash but standards are not the same from place to place and you want to be sure what you have is good and clean and smells fresh.

<--- Opposite of Numenorean; I buy all my clothes secondhand pretty much

I bet they don't wash them if they are delivered clean and folded.
My local thrift store has 2 regular washers and 2 regular dryers.
I saw them in the back where the drop off is.

My guess would be that it varies depending on location. I'd imagine that some of the larger thrift stores could have their own laundry facility. However, in my limited experience most consignment and second hand stores do not have them. They just take in whatever seems like it will sell and put it on the racks. If it's nasty or visibly dirty they either won't accept it or they'll trash it.

Oh crap. I just bought $1000+ worth of clothes. 😳

OH YEAH?!?!?

Well I just bought $3000 this month alone but someone like you making less than 100K a year (my level) wouldn't even understand so why bother explaining. :colbert:

second hand shirts....second hand pants....second hand underwear...where's the limit?

Secondhand straws. With underwear you can at least flip them inside out and get the clean side or put them on your face like a sweet mask. What can you do with a straw though? Even if you flip it around you'll just get spittle in the main drink. That's just gross.

i don't' mind 2nd hand clothes. We pass along (and recieve) lots of kids clothes. they grow so fast and even cheap clothes from target or walmart outlast the kids.

last time i was in the salvation army they had underwear and swimsuits. uhm..NO.

A case study we used in a Superfund class was based on dry cleaning operations at a Goodwill distribution center so I'm going with "yes, they do wash the stuff".

IF I bought 2nd hand clothes, I would BOIL them before wearing, it's just not the same as getting things your big brother outgrew, no way to know what these people got on their clothing.

i always wash brand new clothing before i wear it

would do the same with 2nd hand clothing

20 odd years after the second grade, and people are still afraid of cooties. It's a piece of fabric. Do you guys have deloussing chamber in your house? Do you bring your own sheets when you sleep in hotels? Do you bring your own dishes to restuarants?

my washing of new clothing has nothing to do with cooties and everything to do with not liking how brand new clothing feels

also i want them to shrink and or bleed out their excess color before i wear them
