Salvaging a Dell Dimension 8300

Hi everyone. I would appreciate some guidance on a home PC project.

Here's the situation: the Dimension 8300 that we've had for the past 3-4 years has begun to act a bit flaky. For one, I know one of the IDE controllers on the motherboard has stopped working. For another, even at idle, the fan noise is a bit too much. Lastly, if left running a few days, the graphics goes completely wacky.

In short, the system appears to be overheating at times, and I think the mobo is on its last lap, so to speak. The IDE controller going kaput is one sign to me about the motherboard's failing health. I've to assume that the CPU and the memory modules are still good, though I haven't run any tests.

What I'd like to do is transplant the CPU (a P4 3.0GHz Northbridge) and existing 1.5GB of memory (2 sticks of 256MB, 2 sticks of 512MB, all of them PC3200 DDR), onto a new motherboard and case. The HDD, optical drives will be moved over as well. And I don't need any new software. Your recommendations are most welcome.

Above all else, I'd like the end product to be a QUIET system. If its got good looks, even better. The stock Dell case was acceptable, so I'm hardly a judge of case aesthetics!

Are there still motherboards in retail that can accommodate my components? What's a good model? Where?

The budget is $300 or so. Any money left over after case (including PSU) and mobo can be applied towards a nice wireless keyboard/mouse combo, or speaker set, etc.

Thanks for your help and have a great day!

This seems to be pretty much the only option that Newegg still has for socket 478:

The only other DDR1 board is a "recertified" ECS board at the bottom, but I don't know if I would buy that...

For a case, you can use just about anything that's ATX, mATX board fit in every ATX case. This Antec is pretty nice, and it comes with a decent PSU:

If you want to buy a case seperately then this Seasonic PSU is very quiet, among the quietest out there:

And in order to quieten down the PC, removing the dust form the CPU and video card fan should help. If that doesn't help, this CPU heatsink is decent as well:

I don't know if you want to re-use the video card (motherboard has integrated video) but it will only fit if it's AGP anyway and all the PCI-E boards are DDR2 at Newegg. If you want to re-use the video card and it's too noisy still after cleaning you can also get another fan for that, but there are a lot of fans for all the differente types of video card.

$300?

1. Abit IP35-E...$70 AR @ MWAVE
2. 2GB DDR2 667 HP/Crucial RAM...$43 AR @ hot deals forum
3. E2140 or E2160 CPU...$80 at many online retailers
4. $50 case...I like the Antec SLK3000B (if you can find one) or the Antec Solo

Final price is $243 plus shipping and applicable tax.

The Abit IP35-E has superb on-board fan speed control. It is an excellent choice for a quiet PC. See my review in this forum.

Nickel020 and SerpentRoyal, thanks much for the suggestions. Now, if I can find a quiet weekend all by myself... :)
