hi earlier while dusting out my pc, i took out the card (asus x800 pro vivo -xt mod) and, as carefully as i could to avoid spitting on it etc lol (i know i know, but i had no canned air), blew over it and banged it lightly a few times. Sigh, now when i boot, the screen is totally white with artifacts... Tried reseating it with no luck. Any suggestions or is it time to get a new card?

Also, since i ironically do not game any more really [no 3d ones at least,] what cheapish card would give the clearest 2D picture that has linux driver support?

Try wiping down the conection on the card with alcohol and use compressed air on the slot. Make sure its BONE DRY before reassembling.

I'd say Matrox for a good 2D card. Linux drivers I'm not sure about.

Banged it lightly? That doesn't sound good. I'm afraid you may have damaged it. Videocards tend to be fairly fragile. In the future let the dust build until you can get some compressed air.

Check that the heatsink is properly attached. Maybe it's not making proper contact.
