Salt Water Fishing equipment

Ok. Need some advice on what type of equipment to get. I want to do some medium to heavy shore fishing along the california coast. But also possibly some ocean fishing as well. Wanted to know what a good size rod for this would be. I'm looking at 9' up to 12'. And also wanted to know what reel is good or if there is a review site somewhere. I haven't found much in regards to rod and reel selection for saltwater fishing. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!
