I heard from my friend that you don't have to pay sales tax if you go shopping in New York (we're from California). Is this true/legal? I'm gonna be going to NY during break and I wanna do some major damage on my credit card; if theres really no sales tax it would help lessen my credit card bill. :p

Dude, you have to pay whatever taxes they have in that state if you shop there. Doesn't matter if you're from Iceland like our friend Czar. Still have to pay taxes.

If you live in California, and purchase something ONLINE from a company located in New York, you don't have to pay sales tax to get it shipped to your address in California.

But, if you physically travel to NY, you have to pay sales tax and bridge tolls, etc. just like everyone else there.

I actually believe that is true. Like I am from Oregon, and was just down in California. Techically, I could have pulled out my Oregon ID and told them I don't have to pay California Sales Tax. But you would have to be a real ass to do this, as it creates a big hassle for the sales clerk.

Unless the company you're buying from has a store in California.

AS ucvb6 indicated

Some states have sales tax exemptions on certain items. Therefore, if you buy something that is tax exempt and do not realize it, you might make the assumption that the state has no sales tax or that they are just being friendly to you (dream on). A local may understand the tax structure and therefore not give it a second thought.

They more than make up for it by bending you over for shipping charges

When I lived in New Jersey during the early 1990s, I believe that there was no sales tax on clothing.

Some states will refund sales taxes on certain items and up to a certain amount. You can not just go in with an out of state ID and claim you don't have to pay taxes, they will laugh at you.

In New Orleans, there is a place at the airport where you can bring your receipts, your out-of-state ID, and your plane ticket and they will refund the state taxes you paid on things you are leaving the state with. (city taxes are not refunded) You can also pick up a form and mail in a claim when you return.

Some other states have a similar program.

I use the one in Canada all the time - when I return from a business trip, I mail in copies of my hotel bill, clothing items I bought, etc., and they refund the GST I paid on it. The taxes on 7-day hotel stays can really add up and it's nice to get some of it back. Of course, my company paid for the room, *I* claimed the refund. ;)
