Salaried workers and overtime.... does it piss you off?

I am about to start law school, and I am looking forward to the eventual salary many lawyers make. But if you break it down hourly, it doesn't seem nearly as good. Working 65+ hours a week as a high ranking cop I would probably make nearly as much.

I have friends who are accountants and make 45k a year or so, but work 50+ hours a week. (Sometimes 60+ I think).

Point is, are those of us who are salaried workers just slaves, or would you be happy to work 60 hours a week for 125k a year?

I am salaried, and I work over 50 hours per week easy. I hate it and it's not fair. I don't even make a great salary.

A lot of lawyers and ibankers make ~130k+ starting, but work 12 hour days. Or they work Saturdays and/or Sundays.

They often pick one night a week to party, then go out and blow $200 buying drinks for the best looking girls they can find.

It's a life... but it's not for everyone.........

I'm salaried and don't get overtime. For me it works out because sometimes I cut out early or get in late and don't have to worry about getting a short check because of it. On the other hand a few days last week, and probably this week I'll be working 12 hour days. But I figure in the end it all evens out, and it doesn't happen that often so I'm alright with it. But if overtime were an every day thing I would certainly be looking to get another job ASAP.

Salary working 40hrs/week = no promotion
Salary working >50-60 hrs/week = fast track to promotion and higher increases in yearly adjustments

this of course depends on your profession...

I'm salary but get paid straight time if I need to work over 40 hours per week. Last year I had about 300 hours of EWW pay in 9 months (about 7 to 8 hours per week extra).

If you know it coming in, can you really b1tch that much? I'm not salaried, but a lot of people where I work are. When they get hired, they're told that you're expected to work at least 60 hours during the tax season (Jan through April basically) and here is the salary, they get no overtime, these are the benefits.

Some companies have an almost mandary 45-50 hour work week for salaried employees. I know for a fact two of the Big 4 accounting firms do, and most people end up working 50-60 on average.

I personally haven't been a salaried employee of anyone in the past ~5 years, and I don't plan on it anytime soon. I want every unit of work that I put forth to equal one unit of return.

True... you would be surprised how quickly your managers and higher ups notice your work patters.

Still.. the worst scenarios are the salaried with no overtime with the expectation of 50-60 hours a week.

That's why you need to ask before you accept the job.

Long hours with no OT suck big time. Been there, done that, quit that job myself.

Salary with OT option is the best IMO.

Salary working >50-60 hrs/week = bad attitude but no one else is there to see you working so they think you're a "bad seed" and give you "Performance Improvement Notifications"

If you're in telecom....

Fixed.

i'm salaried with overtime. right now it's my busy time of the year. (actually it never ends....ever)

so for the 65+hours that i work per week the paychecks are nice. working 50s till november is great and the best for me. easy work week & good pay. december kinda sucks since i'm getting my straight salary.

i'm really happy that my company gives us OT. some in my profession don't get it.

Basically, a lot of accounting and law firms work this way. Salary, 55+ hours expected, and no OT.

Then again, as a lawyer, you are making anywhere from 100-200k. But is it worth it?

That's a starting salary, starting being the key word. If you're good then the number tends to get a bit larger.
Of course there are other ways to make that kind of money, legally too :p
