First Impressions

Note: I've played roughly 4 hours of the single-player game (not coop). This is not a review but my short-and-sweet first impressions . Also: the fun is going to be overused in my description of the game. :)

Graphics
This game looks a lot better than SR1 and SR2, but graphically speaking I don't think SR3 is going to blow anyone away. Technically Volition has managed to smooth things out. There is now more of a steady frame rate, more post processing effects going on, less screen tearing and the animations are better. Overall, it's just more interesting to watch.

What is also wonderful is the wackiness of the game spills out into the overall look and feel of the game. There is a lot of great and wildly fun things going on with the UI; Each mission complete screen is a dramatic screen cap of the action. Every activity seems to have it's own little animation and graphic style.

Sitting back after playing it for a few hours, I realize there was one thought that kept popping into my head about the graphics: Saints Row The Third looks more like GTA4 (graphically!) than I thought it would. The texturing of the streets now look like they have potholes, nicks and are degrading from ware. I seem to remember SR1/SR2 having streets looking like plastic bags taped together. Whatever that means. The point is, the game looks better but it's still lot Skyrim, or even GTA4 (but close).

Also: The UI is snappier and cleaner in design than its predecessors.

Gameplay
I've been focusing on purchasing property and some side stuff to build up my cash flow first so I haven't had too much time with the SP portion, but what I've seen is a lot more interesting and fun to play. The script is now legitimately funny at times, and other times it can be a bit boring and drabble on.

The main mechanic is the leveling system that unlocks more abilities. This level system is based off of respect, which is gathered by doing just about anything that's considered violent or juvenile. :)

The side stuff is great! One of my favorites so far is the Insurance Fraud where you run around trying to rack up as many points in damage (to yourself) as possible. This is done by hitting one of the shoulder buttons, which makes you ragdoll, and then watching your character bounce around a free and rack up cash. So. much. fun.

The Mayhem missions consist of you driving a tank around town and blowing stuff up as you build a multiplies racking up cash.

There are a few more that are also great but, whatever, just go get this game, turn your brain off and enjoy.

Oh and for those that might be curious: The cussing is still there but it's not as aggressively gratuitous as the previous ones. Oh and the use of Kanye West's Power is perfect--you'll see.

Looks like this game is only getting an 80 on metacritic. Not that that is a bad score, but with so many other games out I think I will wait for it to be around $30.

I've been waiting for this for a long time, until Skyrim came out of course. It will be a while before I pick this up.

Next on my list is BF3 anyway.

Been playing since lunch. It is a nice break from Skyrim.

Also, the game looks horrible and I love it. Like a sequel to a B movie you love.

Just thought I'd poke in and say, I'm having an absolute blast with this game. The combat is awesome, the missions are fun and varied, and there's generally a ton of content. My favorite part about it is that you really feel like you're slowly taking control over the city. Right now I'm driving around and trying to buy every property I can.

The way that small gang fights can quickly escalate into epic battles on the streets is particularly awesome.

I am loving it. I am also feeling like its missing something that was in SR2. Cant put my finger on it. Love the graphics and the driving dynamics! This is a great time-waster game! And the best part is they kept the hispanic female voice from SR2! That bitch was too damn funny!

This is on my list once I've done my first play through of Skyrim. Gotta take a break before starting up my evil thief character.

Loving the graphics now. They were a little shoddy at the beginning but have improved.

It also seems shorter for some reason. I owned more than half of the city in the first 4 hours of playing.

Man, I just had one of those moments.

I picked up 3 gang members and we went to clear a gang spot. We cleared it out and got chased by a ton of cars and cops. We ended up at the airport where me and my friends loaded into a black private jet. I flew it to the top of the tallest building and we all jumped out. We landed in another gang spot where I promptly pulled out my UAV and rain rockets down on top of the spot. We then high tailed it to a gun shop I owned and lost the people chasing us.

It...was...epic...

Oh, and the big naked man. LOL!!!!!

I saw that the PS3 version has SR2 in it. I never really gave it a shot, so maybe when I do get it I will get it on the PS3.

What is the easiest way to make money?

buy a store then buy a shop. Stand in shop and wait till one hour of game time has passed. Check your phone and accept the money deposit. Rinse and repeat for all the other real estate and shops.

It took a few hours to get $40,000 coming in every 10 mins or so.

A couple of quirks that bug me:

In SR2 when you had 1,2 or 3 followers it showed you their pics on top and you had a lot of interaction with them. in SR3 they are just with you, not much banter going on. Not much banter going on at all with the NPCs.

Also, the missions seem to have not much of a story line attached, im only 15% completed but no real substance so far.

I love the game for the crazy shit you can do but I hope it gets a tad deeper.

I also kida wish the gang stuff was seperate like in SR2 but i do dig the fact that you can has massive fights with motr than one gang and the cops. Makes for epic battles!

you still see their pictures in the top right. Sometimes at least. Sometimes I have 3 people and only see 1 portrait with two more saints icons.

Weird, I see nothing. Bug? Also, most of the time the car-horn does not work, and when it does work it's usually after I pressed the button a few times. BTW, I am playing on the xbox-360 so it may be a tad buggy on it. Loads less buggy than SR2 was at inception tho.

Anyway, man, I am having a blast in this game!

Every time I try to steal the jet boat is is destroyed before I get to it. Also, these missions are hard as hell, way too many enemies

I put 12 hours into it in 2 days and have been hesitating on taking new missions because I just don't want it to end. A friend and I messed around in co-op for a few hours and it was a blast. I'll probably only put a couple hours in over the next couple days, but will surely finish it over the long weekend.
