The National Guard is on standby, people were getting out of the city tonight just in case. I've heard a lot of folks are either calling out or working from home tomorrow. I may or may not, we'll have to see. Fortunately I don't work downtown any more.

I'm not privy to all of the details in the case, but police shooting people is way too common place and officers should be held to higher standards. That said, if this turns into a riot, it's only going to hurt the movement to try and get these police interactions resolved more peacefully. No good will come of violence.

Local activists are saying "disruptive not violent", which is what I hope happens. There were four murders and several assaults within a block of old office the first year I was there. Tensions are really high here and I'm afraid this could get much worse.

Guilty or Innocent, I hope the correct verdict is handed down.

that's a hell of a fall, west point -> bronze star in iraq -> murder and planting evidence

i don't remember this case on the national news, i guess it got jumbled up with all the others

After what he said on the dash cam during the chase there really isn't a defense as he clearly stated his intent. If he isn't found guilty I don't blame residents for raising hell as long as they respect the rights of other people and property. You should see the bullshit the Jacksonville Sheriff's Department is doing and just how many winners we have working here.

Overpopulation, lack of self control = riots

Being that they initially decided not to indict, there is a high probability he will be acquitted.

Read the case. Look like no brainer for an indictment.

Cop threatened to kill suspect. Gun found at scene had cops DNA on it but not suspects. Looks planted. Cop killed suspect.

what a shitty screen name/ post combo

If they weren't confident in murder conviction, I imagine a lesser charge or plea would already have happened.

I don't make as much of the murder threat indicating intent as others seem to. There are a lot more heated murder threats out there then actual murders. But, clearly the guy was in no shape to act as a responsible police officer at the time, and had consciousness of guilt if the gun being planted is as transparently true as it seems. I'm no expert in police procedure, but I can scarcely imagine that they had cause to initiate a dangerous chase and ram the vehicle to end it. I'm personally pretty disturbed by his partner's described actions. He should not have so readily complied with the chase and rammed the vehicle and allowed a very uncomposed officer to approach the vehicle alone.

But this is another example of a commonality I see in all these cases. The officers are feeling personal threats to their authority and are not acting rationally even if their actions otherwise are within police procedure.

There is enough evidence to indict, but I think beyond a reasonable doubt for 1st Degree Murder is a stretch. They should have charged him with a lesser offense.

For people who don't have any interest in following criminal cases, it's insanely difficult to get a conviction on that charge.

I can't believe the dumb shit chose to be tried by a judge. With this kind of political pressure, the judge has absolutely no choice but to convict. This is a 100% guaranteed conviction.

Failed to convict on both counts. As expected, the prosecutor over-reach of trying to convict cops in questionable use of force incidents with the highest possible offense is met with utter failure. I can understand why people do not understand that concept, but because there are varying levels of killing someone, the highest level is therefore the hardest to get the conviction on.

The political and mob threat pressure actually worked in his favor. Either the judge lets him off, or he wins an appeal because of "political pressure and mob threats" Either way, the defendant wins and impartial justice loses.

How on earth did that escape conviction? It was premeditated (stated on-tape), planned (to the extent one person with a gun needs to plan a murder against someone without one), willful, and done with malice. I get it, lawyering is hard, but what was missing here?

possibly because saying something in the heat of the moment doesn't qualify as premeditation?

A good example of that is in the movie 12 Angry Men.

Wait so the cop shot and killed him, then planted a gun on the guy, and got away with no conviction at all? What was his explanation for the gun?
