Saint Augustine FL

Well the misses and I booked a Bed and Breakfast with a killer hot tub in the room and is located in the historic district of Saint Augustine.

I've never been though and wanted to know of any suggestion for "must see/do" activities while there.

We were planning on doing all the ghost tours we can since she loves that sort of thing and it'll be real close to Halloween also.

But besides that we don't really have an idea what else to do besides just checking out the historic district and old fort.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I have never been, but i have heard wonderful things about that part of FLA...
Congrats to both of you! I am sure you will have a great time 🙂

Well I used to be stationed right near there at Jax Fl.
me and my ex wife stayed in that area for our Honeymoon as well, but then drove down A1A (i think is the designation) all the way to Daytona stayed there for a day... and then drove into Orlando and did Disney and Universal for 2 days..

it was a fun

Don?t worry about it. I guarantee you will have a good time.

We live in St John?s County and find St Augustine a convenient weekend get a way. We have also done the BB thing a couple of times and loved it.

The walking shopping district is wonderful. Lots of local items and much, much, more. The Christmas shop is a neverending store with something for everyone. There's a Ripley's Believe it or Not Museum that my family found to be delightful (maybe we were just in a silly mood at the time.) There are sightseeing trains as well as horse drawn carriages. Tour the Ponce de Leon Hall at Flagler College - a former luxury hotel Pic now on the Historic Register. There's also the Lightener Museum if you like.

Those are all things I have enjoyed many times at St Augustine. I hope you have a great time!

Thanks for the info!

The fiancee and I both enjoy museums and that sort of thing so I'm sure we'll check it out and that hotel looks crazy.

1. The historic village is enough to keep you romantically busy for days, just walking around and shopping, seeing museums, art galleries, etc. Numerous great bars and restaurants within the village and along the waterfront. Also, the Fountain of Youth "park" is worth seeing (reconstructed Indian village at site of Ponce de Leon's landing).

2. The Castillo de San Marcos is a great way to blow several hours (touring the castle, snapping panoramic photos from the battlements, watching the interactive displays, etc.), and if you see nothing else while there, at least tour the castle (your only chance to see a real European castle in America, and not a "manor" home for nobles, either, but a real designed-for-warfare fighting fortress with a stunning view of the town and harbor).

3. Theres also a smaller fortress south of there on the outlet of the same bay (enters at St. Augustine, then narrows and flows south where it goes back out to sea), allowing the defenders to control both entrances to the waterway, and shell approaching warships from either direction. To reach the fort, you have to take a motorboat across the inlet to the island on which it sits, and the entire area is wooded and beautiful.

4. Double-deck tour ships take rides around the harbor several times a day. Well worth the money, and very romantic, with great views of the village, castle, Bridge of Lions, etc.

5. Since St. Augustine is not a spring-break "party" town, the white-sand beaches are very clean, and relatively empty and quiet. Perfect for an quiet day at the beach with your woman.

6. On the north side of the bay is a remote, secluded restaurant back in the woods with a dining area set up on the dock, where you can actually watch the boats come in with the "catch of the day". All kinds of seafood and alligator dishes, great mixed drinks, and even live music at night (jazz and such, not loud-ass club music). Very intimate. I don't recall the name, but ask around and you'll find it.

7. The Alligator Farm. It might not be romantic, but its a fvcking spectacle, especially at feeding time. Part of the park is a deck extending out over a large lake, which is just swarming with huge prehistoric beasts that swim right under your feet. You won't forget it.

Dunno if its been mentioned, but these are things that i liked about it:
Gatorland (or whatever that big ass gator place it, it rocked!)
Anastasia park (very nice beach, good surfing when there are waves)
the old fort area, its a great place to get loaded and just walk around for a day.
South of there is a beautiful drive along a1a
..... Thats about it, did i mention the surf is good when there are waves?

We just got back from there yesterday and it's a great place (this was our second time). Do yourself a favor and do the suncoast trolley thing. They take you to most of the big tourist areas. You can get off/on the trolley all you want until around 5pm.

Things to check out:
- Flagler college (especially the revamped Tiffany stained glass displays)
- Flagler Methodist church (there is another church but can't remember the name)
- Ripley's Believe It Or Not (goofy but pretty fun and you may actually learn something)
- The St. Augustine Lighthouse (the view from the top is awesome)
- Castillo San Marcos (the big fort).....try to get there before 10:30am on the weekends to see them go through the steps of firing a canon (which is pretty cool and damn loud!)
- The downtown historic district is a great place to walk around and shop/eat.
- Potters wax museum is pretty cool too
- There is a grouping of 9 very old structures/houses that are maintained by a College/Museum (I forget the name) but it is in the historic district. Very cheap to get into and worth the few bucks it takes to get in (plus you will be helping to fund a local museum which is always a good thing.

Everything except the lighthouse is within easy walking distance of from downtown but it would be worth paying for the trolley only because it takes you right to the attractions (instead of wasting your time trying to find them by yourself...especially if you are walking).

Hope you have a great time.

Going to check into the trolley thing for sure.
