Sager..worlds best NB?

Recently I was at a workshop held by Intel and I noticed that virtually all the laptops in engineering were Sager Laptops, one of the engineers from Micron was also carrying a Sager and he said Micron uses Sager exclusively..after some light digging it seems Sager is a very highly regarded piece but almost totally unknown to the unwashed masses..they don't seem to advertise in conventional rags and I've never seen them rated in shootouts but after visiting their site, I doubt they would have problems beating all the lenovo, hp's,dells, macs etc etc handily. Question, why is such a stellar laptop so completely unknown except to industry pros..even Anandtech forums rarely mentions them?

In terms of sheer performance per cubic inch, Sager is hard to beat. But other laptops from other makers best them in areas. Weight, size, battery life, and other factors come into play. It is very difficult for any one maker to have the undisputed 'best' notebook. It might be the best gaming notebook (for example), but that means that it is probably a pretty terrible 'toss it in the bag and take to class' notebook. Specs are only part of the story.

suppose Intel engineers preferred HP laptops. Think that would help sell Intel products to Dell ?

Sager is such a small player, no big player cares if some engineers use them.

just pointing out there are reasons other than being "best" for things that are observable.

Not to mention, Intel has close to 100,000 employees, I doubt your observation of a few employees means anything at all.

It depends if you respect an engineering dept or not..I wouldn't have cared what any other dept uses or joe blow at best-buy but as mentioned..the right folks here seem to know about Sager.

sounds better giving the credit to the sales and branding then talking about clevo and the manufacturing.
i enjoyed my clevo (not sager branded i7 975ee laptop. stupid fast. stupid battery time.)

it's not the hardware that makes sager, because many companies use the exact same hardware.

Sager is just a Clevo rebadger, nothing to see here, move along.

The guys at the workshop you visited probably just use them because they're cheap, suit their purposes, and they got a volume discount.

I had a Sager two laptops back, very nice piece of hardware. I'd buy one again if I was in the market for a performance laptop again. These days, I'm more for the thin&light segment more than I am raw performance.

I am thinking of getting a sager 17 in with a 6970M. I will get it with a seagate momentus xt for storage, and I have a spare SSD (adata sandforce) to use as a boot drive. Will install windows and SSD myself.

The one thing I havent figured out yet is, how much difference does the extra 2M lvl 3 cache of the i7 2820QM make over the 2630? I know the only difference between the 2720 and 2630 are frequency, but I was wondering if the extra 2M cache is worth the extra money. Ordering from xoticpc.com

Thoughts?

I was at a 1 day conference for ssd roadmaps yesterday, and the two micron guys were using thinkpads....just like mine.
I think the 'Sager exclusively' comment by the micron guys is incorrect.

I didn't hold him to it and as mentioned earlier..I think the standout part of the Sager boils down to great support such as powernotebooks offers, I misspoke regarding the 'worlds best' moniker but definitely a top tier NB. 🙂

Are you in Washington ? I'm thinking this is a west coast thing. There's millions of people out there on the coast, but it's still not the whole country. I doubt they sell many anywhere except the west coast and maybe some scattered nerds.

I disagree, Powernotebooks is one of the highest rated NB sellers on Resellerratings.com and have been for over 35 years so obviously many savvy people from all over the world have purchased thru them..it's not a left coast thing at all.

How are the dock options for the "worlds best" notebook?

What about mSATA support for the new microSSD cards?

How about GPU/integrated graphics switching to maximize battery life (Nvidia Optimus)?

Is there native Displayport support?

This. I've bought sager, and they are fine, but they are nothing special. You pretty much give up looks, weight, and size for them, but they are at decent prices, and are easily customized.

I like raw performance with low energy usage 🙂
I noticed as mentioned how great the customizing is even though I found using the configurer--I always ended up with a Sandy B i5 desktop replacement which was easily the fastest computer I've ever considered. ok.. I like the 5160 since it offers all the latest hardware and it looks like I talked myself into this. Thanks all 🙂

I own a Sager np9262 which I bought in 2008. Just recently each videocard burned out. At least I can replace the cards with something newer. I used Fallen earth as a benchmark to compare to a new Dell XPS 15 that I got from costco, to see if it was worth it to put the new card in. The new laptop still does not compare with the Sager, granted the Sager was about 5k. The biggest problem I have with it is heat. Even with a cooler with fan it can get a bit overheated slowing down the performance on 3D applications. Oh and with the NP9262, you arent going to be carrying anthing else, at 12pounds you might want a rolling carrier.

Resellerratings doesnt mean anything that's relevant to what I said. And the company you mention, which nobody has ever heard of, is a west coast business.

Which is what I said.

Power notebooks? That's one of the top US laptop customizing companies.

I was just at Micron for an interview and they sure as hell arent using Sager exclusively.

And my experience with them since the Prostar days has always been poor. They must have made huge improvements to quality in the last couple years which I dont know about.

No they really aren't. You could ask 100,000 people if they've ever heard of them, or 10,000,000 for that matter, and no one would know what you're talking about.

I don't know about their quality, but they look very generic to me. I guess they don't have much resources to put into design like Dell, HP, Apple, etc.
