Sager 8170 Radeon 6990m replacement

A few years ago I bought I Sager 8170 with a Radeon 6990m in it.
Worked great until a few days ago when the screen would shift to the right and get all weird. Closing the lid and opening it was the only that I found but it was temporary.

I'm able to boot to safe mode ok.

Yesterday I tried to uninstall the drivers and reinstall a newer version.
It doesn't help. latest AMD drivers cause it to BSOD. Tried the drivers that came with the laptop and I get to the windows loading screen then it goes black and sits there forever, no activity on the system at all, not even the HD light blinks.

Used DDU to uninstall every AMD driver and reinstall original driver, same issue with black screen. removed drivers again and tried newest driver, same as before with the BSOD.

Removed drivers and let windows handle it. Installs generic driver but I can't change from 640x480. Windows update doesn't find any AMD drivers available.

I also tried doing F8 during boot and disable driver signing but no luck.

Research seems to indicate my video card is dead.

Laptop is 4 years old now and no longer under warranty.

I was looking to buy another 6990m but not sure where to find but Ebay and they're all used and from China. Plus they're all over $200.

I can't afford another laptop like this one (cost $1600 originally). Its still a great laptop, I use it every day and even still play the latest games on it.

I might just have to bite the bullet on one from Ebay (from China).

I'm not sure what else might work in this system. Looking at the sager driver page, it lists the 6970m, and also the 560m and 580m Nvidia cards, but they're also the same (or more) on ebay as the Radeon cards.

Tried the baking the card in the oven trick last night but I can't find my thermal paste to put it the heatsink back on. ordered another tube off amazon and it won't get here til tomorrow. hoping that works.

Nice work. Just curious, any chance the sager would support an upgrade to a 970M? IIRC, I also have a 8170, and they claim to support the user upgrade-able GPUs.
