What are you talking about. It might be the most expensive spice in the world but it's not that expensive.

b. that is *really* cheap, amazingly so. guess i found my new source, thanks for the link. i've never seen it cheaper than $70 an ounce or so

For those curious what saffron is, it's actually the stigma of a crocus flower (Crocus sativus). The stigma is the knobbed or lobed organ at the end of the pistil. It's so expensive because the only way it can be harvested is by hand, one flower at a time, and when it is dried each stigma weighs practically nothing.

Not every locale can support saffron crocus farming. They'll grow in a lot of places, but they need a Mediterranean climate to thrive and flower. I grew some here in Ohio for a while, but they never bloomed, and after a while the mice ate them and they just died away.
