You only need a small amount of Saffron though...it is quite potent.

Has anyone tried smoking it?

Saffron is expensive, but I don't think it's $300 an ounce. Where most spices come ground up, the saffron I have in my cabinet is in a little dish with a lid. Saffron is a filament. It looks like a small reddish colored fiber almost like a type of grass... When it is dissolved in a soup it turns a yellowish color. I knew nothing about saffron, but my mom got me some for Xmas... She was intrigued when she first saw it. (don't critique her Xmas gifts. They may be weird, but they certainly surprise me every year. ;) )
