Safety Latch On Stock AMD HSF?

My San Diego didn't come with a safety latch on the hsf. Is this normal? Is it OK?

no its not because you will not be able to securely latch down the HSF on top of the CPU

This what AMD sent though. There is a latch to lock the HSF down to the mobo, but the extra latch that swings doen was not included.

o right the latch for the HSF is there .. well thats ok then 🙂 .. what is this other latch you speak of i am not familiar

On the AMD heatsinks I have dealt with, there is a swing arm, but not the latch they speak of in the instruction manuel that is supposed to lock the swing arm down. All these procs still work fine.

that was what I was wondering about. Sounds like I will be fine.

Just got it all together, but now I have to go to a party with my wife. Guess the real fun will start tomorrow. I hope it powers up fine!!

Aside from the latch which is ok for the San Diego I got. What is that gray patch underneath the heatsink? Is that a cheapo thermal grease?

Somebody just told me that that gray thing on the heat sink is a thermal pad. Should I remove this before putting some AS5 on the CPU?

Actually, that is pretty decent thermal paste. I would try that out for a while before reapplying AS5, to see if it is sufficient.
