Every so often I need to go out into the factory area to work on a PC or something. When I'm out there, I'm required to wear either safety glasses or add some kind of side shields to my regular glasses.

I need to wear my regular glasses to see so I tend to just use the side shields that slip on over your frames. The ones we have here at work are garbage. They barely fit my frames. They were even scraping the plastic off my old glasses when I used them and now that I have a brand new pair, I'd rather not get them scraped up.

Basically, the side shields have a piece of plastic that goes around your frames and is held on/tight by a small screw. my frames barely fit through this opening, the screw and metal piece that it screws into always falls apart, and they're a huge PITA to put on and take off.

Is there a brand or type of safety glasses than will fit over top of a pair of regular glasses or is there a much better side shield attachment? I'd prefer to get a pair of safety glasses that fit over top of my regular glasses as that would be best.

I'd also like them to be inexpensive as I'll probably have to pay for them myself. I'll have to find out if they would reimburse me for it.

I wear glasses when I am not at work and when working, I am required to were saftey glasses. So, my company paid for a pair of prescription safety glasses. Some people have presription glasses that have side shields and some have safety glasses that have a built in side sheilds.

The most important thing to remember when using glasses with side sheilds is to make sure you have Z87 LENSES, or else your not really wearing safety glasses. The Z87 specifications define how strong the lenses are. not all reular lenses are made to the standard b/c its not always needed for normal use.. My regular glasses, to the best of my knowlege are not Z87 specs. which is why I got new ones for work.

Just something to think about if you attempt to use "regular glasses" with side sheilds. Unforutanly, I have OCC Outlaw safety glasses from AO Safety which have a built in side shields, so I can't really reccomend somthing for ya.

If you are required to wear for work in the least bit, you really need to talk to your company about getting reimbursed for them. If they care about safety at all, they shouldn't be cheap about it.

I used to just put the pair of goggles they gave you over my glasses. They'd fog up with the heat and sweat, but if you're not doing anything too strenuous they work ok.

If you have decent optical, have them make a set of safety glasses in your prescription. My dad works in a shop 10 hours a day, and he wouldn't have it any other way over the custom glasses.

Go to HD or Lowe's and start trying them on - I know when I had glasses, I'd put a pair over them instead of clipping stuff on. Doubtful you could rely on anything online to guarantee if it will fit over your specific glasses.

Universal side-shields cannot be placed on regular prescription glasses. This creates a false sense of security and safety. Universal side shields are to be used only on prescription safety glasses that meet the ANSI Z87 standard for impact or high impact specifications. While side shields do not make regular prescription glasses safety glasses, they do ensure prescription safety glasses provide a side or lateral protection to the eyes from chemicals and flying particles.

29CFR1910.133(a)(2)
The employer shall ensure that each affected employee uses eye protection that provides side protection when there is a hazard from flying objects. Detachable side protectors (e.g. clip-on or slide-on side shields) meeting the pertinent requirements of this section are acceptable.

29CFR1910.133(a)(3)
The employer shall ensure that each affected employee who wears prescription lenses while engaged in operations that involve eye hazards wears eye protection that incorporates the prescription in its design, or wears eye protection that can be worn over the prescription lenses without disturbing the proper position of the prescription lenses or the protective lenses.
