Mmmmm... money order is NOT the way to go. Use PayPal or a check. You can contest the charge through PayPal if they don't delivery, if you use your credit card through PayPal, you can also contest the charge through the credit company. Writing a check leaves the person traceable... they can still rip you off, but it leaves a paper trail and you could track them down more easily. Which would involve contacting the person's local police department.. waiting.. and waiting.. sometimes getting poor response from the police, or no help at all in a case of mine til months later.

If anything, try PayPal.

Know his phone #, his full name and always be suspicious of P.O. boxes.

You should always deal with someone who will give you atleast 2 replies per day, meaning fast correspondence. Money Order is safe because you hold the receipt. Keep track of your messages, Print if necessary. Delivery Confirmation is a must.

That's about it. If you are ripped off, contact the police department. Theft is a heavy fine, especially dealing with someone from different states.

Escrow is almost never used anymore, mostly because it ends up ripping off the seller, i.e., buyer breaks it, borrows for a week, swaps it out for a broken identical, etc. Even ebay ditched their i-escrow investments when they realized how terrible it was.
