I am moving to the UK. I have a flat screen lcd with the original packing, so I think that is safe to ship... but I don't have any clue on how to safely ship my PC. I mean it is easy enough to find a box big enough to how a mid tower case and pad it... but I guess I am just concerned if the package is subjected to harsh bumps in travel and/or handlers that don't give two poops about your property. I have an ATI x1900GT graphics card, and although it isn't the massive galaxy class cruiser the AiW is, it still doesn't look like the type of card to handle a good jossling without some damage.

Does anybody have any experience/advice about shipping a PC overseas? Any case to be made of my paranoia?

I have to keep carrying Hardware in my suitcase and I def try and pad it as best I cna .. but they still manage to get a cpl of bruises... Id say disassemble the parts and pack them individually.... but thats just me. If you courier it (might cost u a bomb) but they offer insurance so u can insure it that way if they break anything they pay for it...

I have no experience.

But, I would remove any heavy coolers you may have in the system.
I would remove the graphics card and ship it inside its box or put the box inside your suitcase.
I would double box the monitor.

Last time i moved my computer from the UK to the US I took it all apart, put everything in anti-static bags, surrounded them with bubble wrap and then stuffed all the parts into my rucksack and suitcase liberally surrounded with layers of clothes. It was all fine at the other end. I didn't bother bringing the tower itself and just bought a new one but i'm sure if you wrap it up in bubble wrap and stick it in a suitable box with extra packaging to fill in the gaps it'll be fine and you'll be able to check it in.

Last year I actually shipped a 'very' fragile glass lamp wrapped in bubble wrap, in a decent sized box with the gaps filled with crunched up newspaper, checked it in on the plane, changed planes twice and it arrived in perfect condition.

Ahoy,

I recently just moved from california to alberta, canada. I decided after seeing what happened to my friend's PC which he tried to ship compltely assembled via UPS id never go that route.

What i did was, Took everything apart, and threw out my case. a new case costs $50 bucks for something decent and it was high time I got a new one anyways.

So im left with all the components. What i did was, I got a plastic tupperware type container and lined it with some bubble wrap. I have a 20" Dell UltraSharp lcd, the LCD itself detaches from the base which is nice, it lay nice and flat in the tupperware. I used a piece of cardboard to cover the screen itself, to prevent scratches. i put more bubbled wrap over the top. I used anti-static bags for ram, video, sound card, hard drive. I took the heatsync and fan off the motherboard (important), and just tossed it (it was oem anyways). Put the board in anti-static. All of those anti static bags i shoved into bubble-wrap mailer envelopes and sealed them. Those went in the tuppeware box as well. I closed the tupperware with everything in it, and put FRAGILE stickers all over it. and wrote "computer parts" on the top (for security just incase they dont know wtf it is). this entire tupperware box went into a REALLY HEAVY DUTY plastic suitcase. you could throw this thing off a building and it might still last. It might be hard to come acorss one of those, but do your best. I lined the plastic shelled suitcase with clothes, trustingly checked it with plenty of ID all over the suitcase and off i went on the plane. Arrived 4 hours later, got the suitcase.

Bought a new case, psu, and heatsync and fan. Everything works beautifully. No problems at all.

Hope this helps anyone out :)

Cheers!
