"Safely Remove Hardware" for a hard drive?!?

I just got done with a computer for someone. They have that little "Safely Remove Hardware" icon. When I double click on that, I see that their WD Raptor 74gb harddrive is the only thing listed. Obviously we don't want to safely remove or stop or disable the primary harddrive. Anyone know why this would be listed as something to "Safely remove" or how can I fix this? Thanks!

With my usb enclosures it's real fussy about letting me safely remove them... if I even have an explorer window open it says I have to wait. Thus, I don't think it'll let you safely remove it if it's the active primary drive... but might be fun to check.

As to why it's on the list to begin with, I dunno, I don't have any SATA machines so not sure if that's normal. [edit]I'm slow, apparently it is normal and also as above: [/edit]Anyway, probably should be something asked over in techsupport forum.

Its because you can hot swap SATA hard drives. Unplug it if its not the primary drive while the computer is on, think USB

Yea, It's normal. If it's not your primary hard drive you can take the drive out while the computer is running.
Dont do it if your're using the 4 pin power connector with that Raptor. Only if you are using the SATA power connector.

SATA drives do this.. they are considered a hot swappable HD.
hence the stop device in systray.

Are you using an nforce board by any chance? Seems like it only shows up if you install the IDE driver.

yep yep. would uninstalling the IDE driver get rid of this icon in the systray?

That must have been what did it for me. Last time I formatted I stuck with the MS IDE drivers and that annoying icon hasn't shown up.
