Safely packing a low profile system to fly home

I need to take a low profile system home with me.Is my best bet to remove the HD,pad it and bring it as a carry on and put the system itself into our checked baggage or should I just pack the entire box and bring it on the plane as one of our allowed carry on's?

I'm just bringing the system,no monitors.

take off the heatsink/fan assembly for sure. pack this separately. make sure all drives are physically screwed in, not just held in place by rails. cpu itself should be fine in its socket. make sure all PCI/AGP cards are screwed in as well, not just with a 1-screw holder type thing. make sure all the screws holding your motherboard in place are tight.

I personally wouldn't risk taking it on a plane at all, but if you must, and it qualifies as a carry-on, do that. at least its in your possession at all times.

Removing the heatsink/fan is a good idea. Just remember to re-attach it before you power it up! I don't think I'd bring it as luggage. Just used Fedex or Airborne Express to send it to wherever you're going. It's too easy for luggage to get damaged or stolen once it leaves your sight.
