Safe way to remove SATA drives?

Hey I got a SATA drive what is in a removable rack and I was wondering how you would remove it safely while the computer is running. Im running win XP and have already tried removing the SATA drive and it works. But is there any way to stop all os access to the HD before I remove it? I thougth that SATA was hotswappable but Im just worried about eh OS corrupting data on the drive if it is not completely stopped accessing the drive.

Uninstall the drive from Windows and then remove it? If it can't see it...

I'm not sure since this is new ground for me too.

I think the SATA controller has to support hot swapping.
