Safe to shorten power lead to motherboard?

The power lead from the power supply to the motherboard is easily twice as long as I need it to be...has anyone gone ahead and taken the plug off and trimmed the wires back? Is this easy/safe to do, or even possible? Just wondering. The only thing that would make me nervous is getting the right wires back where they belong!!

i'd recommend using a cable tie or something to simply secure the extra length. Then if you ever need the extra length, you have easy access to it.

As Roosky said, or take off PSU cover and pull excess inside. Just make sure it doesn't block any heat sinks or too much air flow. Perhaps hot-glue or cable tie the excess to one side.

or cut off the wires and recrimp the sucker... costs like $10 or something without tools which cost more.

You also need a special tool that safely removes the atx harness. I once found a site where you could rent the little tool for like $10.....forgot where it was though.

Radio $haft ain't gonna have the correct pin removal tool. {they'll sell you a cell phone or a dish} Overall the complexity of the job isn't worth the results; the chance of damaging the connector is fairly great. I have experimented with removing the connectors from ATX extension harnesses and I destroyed a few connectors before I got the process down 'pat'. I have worked (professionally) with similar type connectors in the automotive industry for over 30 years, even so it was a challenge.

the pin removal tool for the mini-fit 20pin, 24pin, 4 pin or 8 pin connector for ATX and extended or something IS NOT CARRIED BY A LOT OF STORES. expect to pay almost $30 for it.

the link is the tool. its 2 pieces of metal that have little fins coming out separated by another piece of metal. it IS NOT A TUBE. and yes, that $25 price tag IS CHEAP relatively speaking since some places sell it for $40.

The cost of modding it is not worth it IMO...just get a tie and wrap it up and/or possibly put the extra behind the Case where the Mobo mounts...outta sight outta mind.

i have modded some fans with molex male ends rather than the 3 pin mobo connectors, nothing more than wire cutters, wire strippers and a little elecrical tape.

Like everyone said - it isn't worth the time to do what you want to do. I just took all my extra wiring and shoved it next to the power supply which is out of the way and leaves plenty of room for air flow.

Even though it'll be a pain in the butt for what seems to be no valid reason, I say if you want to shorten it go ahead and do it. I see it as a step towards complete customization of a comp. Or maybe I'm just an idiot...

My question, is where do you get a tool, and new pins for th eshortened wires.
They're easily enough removed from the block without damage, replacing them is the hard part.

As an alternative, you could open it up, desolder, shorten, and resolder.
