Safe to run external HDD without case?

Hi all. I have an older laptop HDD, and a spare 2.5" external HDD enclosure. Problem is, the HDD itself is very old, and a bit thicker than the norm (12mm, as opposed to the more standard 9.5mm)...so I can not slide the casing on.

Right now I just have it enclosed in the zippered soft case. But is it safe to keep operating this way? Thanks in advance.

Yes, it's safe in as much as it will work fine. It might not be so robust if you drop it, but that's about all.

lol. I guess I'll just keep it out of the zippered case and leave it in open air when I'm running it.

A floppy drive? Srsly?

Anyway, OP, the drive'll be fine. I ran a 320gb desktop drive out in the open till the dog yanked it off my tower.
