safe to remove thermal pad from cpu die?

I read up on how to remove thermal pad and apply AS2 to my heatsink but I was wondering if I should leave the pink goo (melted pad) thats around the die of the cpu? If removable, what is safe to use. Thanks a bunch!

i typically use some qtips and a little rubbing alchohol.... 🙂
