Safe to buy Refurbished 6600GT from Newegg?

Newegg has refurbished video 6600gt as low as $150. Have anyone bought refurbished video cards from them before? How was the experience?

I tend to see that refurbed video cards on newegg are cards that didn't overclock well, softmod, etc. You may get one that works fine at stock, but you also risk getting one that has issues.

Its probably ok since I've got refurbs that work just fine (non-overclocked) but like Avalon I agree that there are many refurbs which are basically failed overclocks or softmods.

Worth a shot if you dont have the money, but i typically dont like ot buy used items since you dont know what the previous own did to the product. You may never know what exactly was the problem or other problems may arise from that intial problem.

Note that Newegg says they ship without any of the addtional items. No games, no DVI->VGA adapters, no video cables.

My understanding is they usually do ship with that stuff, but they say they don't, so you have to depend on luck.

Also, you might get a card that somebody returned after it didn't overclock well enough.

I read about a new XFX Geforce 6600GT AGP for something like $179 after $30 rebate over on HardOCP... I can't post the link they give for it since the PC I'm on has issues with certain links working...(otherwise I'd just give the link to whoever the vendor is...)

If someone else knows the deal I'm talking about, feel free to post the link.

My XFX 6600GT locked up and monitor turned off during 3DMARK2001SE and 3DMARK2003, so I decided to send it back for replacement. I suppose that Newegg won't reimburse shipping cost so I'll have to eat them? I hope the next card is good,..otherwise, I'll have to keep eating shipping costs!

I was going to return for refund, but noticed that there is a 15% re-stocking fee?

NEVER buy a refurb video card from Newegg!

I just went through the hassle of receiving and then returning three, count them THREE bad video cards. (Jaton 5700LE 128mb PCI video card $73). I ended up waisting the $3 Newegg charged for shipping them, and another $10 to ship the three DOA cards back, so $13 down the drain.

I gave up and bought an Apollo retail version instead ($92).

So, don't buy any refurb Jaton PCI video cards at Newegg, because they'll just ship YOU the bad ones I just RETURNED! ...Oh great! I see they have dropped the price to $60 now...Nice! (The card is normally $109 shipped)...

BEWARE!

EDIT: BTW, just call Newegg or email them and tell them you're not paying any restocking fee and they will agree.

I bought my 6800NUs for SLI from them, they worked great, OCd and came in full retail pack. YMMV- but don't buy brands like Apollo and Jaton- junk.

Rollo, you don't seem to understand. It has nothing to do with brand. It has everything to do with Newegg selling people's returned DOA cards. Newegg is the one selling junk, not Apollo or Jaton (besides, who else sells a decent PCI video card?).

since there seems to be so many threads about freezing issues, bsod issues etc with the 6X series from nV, and that i doubt newegg has the time to properly test every returned card, i would not risk it myself. I would trust eBay more than newegg refurbs, providing it was from a reputable seller.

My brother got a refurbished 6600gt from newegg, and it seems to work fine, but his 3dmark05 score is like 500 points lower than it should be, so maybe the cards is F'd up.

Who the hell in their right minds would purchase some 30 day warrantied, mystery item that's discounted by 10% or so? People look at the lowest prices and can see nothing else, especially the fact that return shipment is the responsibility of the buyer. Unless you've got cash to experiment with, "refurbs" from companies that are in no position to actually fix things are nothing more than a headache waiting to happen.

Makes me wonder even more about those who purchase items second hand off FS/ebay.. the warranty usually officially extends only to original purchasers.. unless they have no intention on asking companies to honor their warranties, by voiding them by overclocking..

To me, the hassle of returning & crap is too much. I'd recommend that you save a bit more and buy a retail unit. Time's money! At least it is to me when dealing with computer items.

Well, I now have a retail Apollo 5700LE 128MB PCI video card and it works wonderfully in a Dell Dimension L1000R. Apollo seems fine to me...and I had never heard of them before, either.

The problem with Newegg refurb as others have noted is that Newegg does not test and repair returns. Any return is simply resold as refurb. So you can get perfectly good card that someone just returned or a bad card. It's a gamble and luck of the draw. If you get a bad card you're lose your time and return shipping back to Newegg.

It used to be that Newegg would sell refurb stuff for like 50% off or more with free shipping so it was worth it to take the gamble and buy bunch if you built lot of machines. Test out all the refurbs and return all the bad refurbs at one time to save on shipping back to Newegg. But now with discount at modest 20-25% and lack of free shipping on most refurb items, it's not worth the gamble anymore IMO. Discount is too small to be bothered with the headache of getting a lemon and short 30 day warranty. You're better off waiting for Hot Deal on the item you want and buying new OEM or retail with full warranty from Newegg and manufacture. The savings will be comparable and you won't have to deal with the potential headaches.
